I just purchased a Ford tractor. The hood emblem says 901. It is a Select-a-speed. It has 540 and 1000 PTO, power steering, power-adjust rear wheels, rear hydraulics, diesel, and wide front end. It is a row crop. Any one know anything about this configuration? When was it likely made? Thanks

I believe the power adjust rear wheels were standard on a row crop model . . . weren't they?

Thanks to all who have responded so far. This tractor is not in bad shape (I'm younger and in worse shape :)), and I am considering a restortion. As near as I can tell, all the original part are there. One piece of info that will help with that decision is if there is a demand for it and the options it has. What do you think?

Are the Model and Serial numbers still legible.... in reply to Kevin3131, 09-16-2007 19:13:43
on your tractor? The diesels came with a 12 volt, negative ground electrical system from the factory. The battery would leak acid and it dripped onto the area of the transmission where the model and serial numbers were stamped eating them away.
One more thing- the early SOS's had problems and they were recalled. The dealer would install a factory updated transmission and they were supposed to restamp the original model and serial number of the tractor onto the replacement transmission. Do you know if yours has been restamped if it's legible at all?

As awhtx said the early models would have had a 981 decal but the later models would have a 901 decal. I have read on this site the change happened in mid 1960.

Just about every thing you listed on your tractor is a option and not stock. The 540/1000 PTO; and rear hydraulics would have been stock on every 981 but the diesel engine; power-adjust rear wheels; power steering; and wide front end; would have been added options from the factory.

Power steering was standard on the 901 series unlike the 900 series.

Ford quit putting on specific model decals... in reply to Kevin3131, 09-16-2007 16:47:11
such as 981,971,961and changed to the generic 901 decal at some point during the production run. I guess it was too expensive to keep separate decals in stock for each specific model.

Thanks. Yes, but it appears fairly original--is a 901 decal right (and you were supposed to figure it out from the PTO) or did they make a 981 decal? Did a 981 typically have all the features I listed?
