I am working on a Ford 4000 3 cylinder gas tractor and have it split at clutch housing because of transmission seal and engine soft plug leakage. The transmission was noisy in neutral and I have noticed that the front 2 gear countershaft cluster seems loose and tends to have a catch in it as I turn the input shaft. I have the gear shift tower off. I have no books on this tractor and need info to proceed. Is this a common problem and where to I get info?

The trouble sounds like bearings to me.
It is not common for these tractors to lose gear teeth, but bearings collapse due to lube problems, water inclusion etc.
The back or output part of the mainshaft can loose preload causing the shaft to feel loose or float.
Good luck
Richard

I recently converted my 1968 4000 3cyl dsl w/SOS trans to manual trans; found the I&T manual very helpful & detailed. These likely available @ dealers & wreckers. If you have SOS & need parts I can help you
