63 2000 - quick way to add oil?

Got my 63 2000 SOS good and hot the other day so I dumped the oil in it (twas time). Now the dilemna is how best to fill her back up with fresh oil. Due to the design of the crankcase breather on the right front of the block it is almost impossible to get more than a trickle of oil going in before it decides to runneth over and make a mess. The valve cover breather opening is as small as the crankcase breather and vertical which pretty much guarantees that I will make a mess if I try that route. Any tips on where to add 5 quarts of oil without babysitting it through a small funnel? Ain"t got all day to drip oil into it.

Now to admit my ignorance..... .. I now know that the crankcase breather housing can be removed from the stand pipe. Never realized this before, which explains this thread. Once the breather is out of the way the oil flows quite nicely in accordance with gravity.
I did find that the lower radiator hose has swelled enough with age that it is starting to show the indention where it is contacting the edge of the breather assembly. Time for a new hose and new antifreeze.

It has obviously been entirely too long since I changed the oil since I had forgotten about the refilling aggravation. I reckon I will just have to add it slow. This time I have a gallon jug of 15W40 so I doubt I can balance it on top of the funnel with any success.

Larry's idea has some merit, I must say. But I think you would have to lean it to the left to keep the oil from coming out the valve cover breather.

As to the street ell on the SOS trans filler hole - already there. Makes that little chore so much easier. It helps that 134 is a little thinner than motor oil. One other trick I learned on this board some years ago was to use the ell and tilt the tractor to the left some to kinda overfill the SOS - keeps fluid in the sump when running up and down steep grades. Must work because I was mowing some pretty good hills earlier this summer and she never acted like she was starving for trans fluid.

The filler tube has internal baffles to help prevent loss of oil due to crankcase blowby. This prevents one from pouring oil in quickly. Still I have not found this to be a major time issue.

I have found it helpful to pull the dipstick to help vent the crankcase when adding oil.

Get a street ell at the plumbing section off a hardware store that will fit. Install it and the funnel will fit better. My tractor has the ell in it with a plug. I left it in the tractor after filling.

I use one of those long skinny funnels they sell ad hardware stopes, the narrow end will fit into the small hole were the oil goes in there the baffle in the breather tube, then just fill it up a few times and since the end of the funnel fits tight into the hole it tends to send it threw faster then just dumping it in a little at a time.

Well . . . I guess you could turn the tractor upside down and dump oil in the drain hole. third party imageOther than that, you're stuck with the filler neck that takes oil slow just like the rest of us. If you pull the dipstick so some air can escape there it may help a wee bit.
