My 4140 tractor is dumping power steering fluid from around the top of the steering column at a pretty good clip. It used to just weep a drop or two, so I wiped it up and went on my way, but now it is getting worse rapidly. I pulled the wheel, and it appears that there is a seal of some kind between the steering shaft and the surrounding housing. The outer edges of the housing look as though they have been peened to hold it in place. Is that true, or am I just looking at damage from the wheel rubbing over it? Is the seal the root of my problem? If so, how do I remove and replace? If not, where should I look next? I need to tighten this thing up ASAP. Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Bill!

You got's problems. The entire column must come out. The seals that are bad are down where the hydraulic fluid comes in. Parts are available from FNH or you can take it apart and match it up at a bearing store for about 1/2 the price. You should also replace the bearings. The sheet metal instrument cluster has to come off and the battery tray has to come loose. Then the whole steering column assembly comes out from the transmission or you can just take the column off of the mount (3 bolts). I'm not real sure how accessable they are while the whole deal is on the tractor.

It's smart to mark the individual parts with an alignment mark to keep them all the same way. I used a center punch to make dimples on each side of each component.

Follow the link to see pictures of this exact component get repaired. I didn't take enough pics to really follow, just enough to keep me from messing up too bad. (hey, it works and is dry!).

Good luck!
