Ford called for 80w90 in the 4 speed and in the differential People are also using the "134" class of trans-hydraulic fluid too.
There are 3 fluid spots. The middle one is the hydraulics and the pump won't like you if you put 80w90 in it. If you want to, you can use the 134 fluid to "flush out" the accumulated gunk of ages, then after a month or so, switch to the 80w90. Just a thought.

Thanks jb I guess the hydraulic fluid is the one with the dip stick. Will any general purpose hydraulic fluid work.

Yeah, most any fluid that meets the Ford spec or generically the UDT (trans-hydraulic) fluid spec should be fine.

(I still like gear oil in the trans and diff --> old school)

Did you see the reply on a newer thread from JimUT that showes the pictures from the owners manual? Shows where all the maintenance areas are. Good read.

My self I use hy-tran in all 3 places on my 841. That way I only have to keep one fluid on hand and it works well. Plus if the seals go bad which they do at times its no big deal if they get mixed togeather
