I"ve used my Ford 640 for well over a year, but never had occasion to run in 3rd or 4th on the road. Plowed, disked, shredded (brushhog) in 1st and 2nd no noise no problem. A week or so ago I had occasion to help a friend about a mile away, so down the road I went in 4th and at a lively clip. Boy there was this clank, clank (speed dependent) noise in either 3rd or 4th that demanded you slow down. Stick the clutch in and the noise went away. It is not a tire or rim problem spent time on that. The sound seems to come from the rear but with my hearing it could originate any place. Anybody have such an experience or have some idea what might be causing this noise? Such could use some ideas!

I'm inclined to go with the ring gear theory, because it fits the symptons and its easier to fix. We'll run the diagnostic JB suggested on the transmission first. I do appreciate you guys and when I finally get it fixed I'll try and let you know the outcome. Thanks again. Bill

It sounds like a gear with a chipped tooth.

If you take off all those bolts that hold the transmission cover on, you can see the gears. Jack up the rear and you can rotate them by turning a rear tire. You will need a new gasket to seal the cover.

I would first jack up the rear end so you can freely spin the tires, then slowly turn them with the trans in each gear. Try and determine where the noise is coming from and in what gears.

Oops, here's the first first thing to do! Make sure all the bolts on the rim and wheel are tight. A loose wheel will make all sorts of noises that sound like they are coming out of other places.

Hard to say without acually hearing it, but it sounds similar to what our Jubilee did a number of years ago. Turned out to be a chipped/broken ring gear tooth in the differential. Lower gears were just slow enough that you didn't notice it.
