Has anyone used Delvac 1 syn in any old ford diesel tractors? I've used it for two years in my 2000 D with no problems and oil consumption is zero. Still, scars me cause of the 5/40 rating

I don't use it and don't really see the point to using it in those old engines. The only worry I'd have about it is the weight. As long as it maintains good pressure at hot idle I wouldn't worry about it, but I don't see the point in using an expensive syn where plain old dyno will gove plenty good protection. If you're only using the tractor up to 300 hours per year, and doing one change per year, then you won't gain anything from the synthetic other than a bit better protection on cold starts...

I"ve been thinking about what you said and your right. The hours we put on these old tractors I will never live long to see the difference. But, I"m one of those guys that likes to do everything I can to insure the longevity of an old tractor so future generations will be able to experiance them.

I have been using synthetic oil in my 8N for ten years now with out issues. I used to use Mobil1 15W-50 in the summer and Mobil1 10W-30 in the winter. For the past two years I have used Mobil1 5W-40 year round with an oil change once a year in the late fall after plowing. I am not sure why a 5W-40 would scare you. The 5W give you good cold start pumpability, while the -40 gives you hot film protection. Philip.

Thanks PhilipIN. I've never used it in an old tractor and have heard war stories about seals and such leaking so thouht I would ask. I've got about maybe 18 months and no leaks. In fact the old 2000 seems to like the oil. When I put it in my new Ford SD PSD the engine became quieter and mpg wen't up almost 2mpg overnight!

B:

I'm not familiar with Delvac 1 synthetic. Is is speced for diesel engines?

If not I certainly would not use it in any diesel engine.

Dean

yes. It is mobil 1's synthetic oil for heavy duty diesel engines. I've been using it forever in my heavy stuff but only the last 18 months or so in my 75 Ford 2000 D. The old tractor seems to like the delvac even if it is 5/40 instead of 15/40 and uses zero oil.
