Can anyone give me some guidance on getting my rear main seal to stop leaking, or tell me the best way to go about changing it out? Do I have to break the whole front engine half of the tractor away from the trans housing? Is there anything else I need to look @ while I am doing this???

Thanks!

Removing the rear main seal without splitting the tractor is a difficult job. Ford used rope seals. Some have had success using a tool called a "sneaky pete". I tried it and it didn't work. Others have spent hours digging the upper seal out and then fishing the new one in. Others have done a temporary fix by dropping the pan and removing the main bearing cap and used a flat punch and hammer to tap the old seal in as far as possible, then taking appropriate sized portions of a new seal and forcing them in to take up the void, leaving it slightly higher than the mating surface. They put in new wedge seals. I did this once and it stopped the leak for a while. As Old says the best way is to split the tractor.

If you split the tractor be sure to check the cover to the hyd pump which is attached to the camshaft. Sometines these leak also.

If it has been leaking very long there is a good chance your clutch has become oil soaked. It's well worth replacing it along with a new throw-out bearing. You should also take the opportunity to replace the transmission input shaft seal as they sometimes leak too and it is an easy job. Hope this helps.

How bad's the leak? is it a drip drip.. or a glug glug.

if an ocasional drip.. I might be inclined to live with it. I rarely see a ford ( or new holland ) that doesn't have a least a few drips of crankcase oil from the trans /bellhousing drain hole.. and that includes new and rebuilt units as well.. them tractors don't take real good to rear main seals for some reason..

Only correct way to do it is split the tractor, pull the clutch and flywheel off etc. If you do all that I would also look at the clutch real good and maybe even replace it since you will have it open and out any how. Its a pretty big job unless you have the right tools for the job
