If I was stuck I'd weld it. Sodel 35 is the rod that I prefer... The preheat is something like 400 F, weld and try to control the cooling somewhat. I've never tried welding something as large as a transmission housing but I have welded a number of smaller castings with good success. To be honest I don't even control the cooling on those smaller parts. Just let em cool...

I would say you would be far better off finding another transmission first though if you can. It's too much work to strip a box out, heat it, weld it, hope it holds, and then put it back together and see what happens. It's not like those 4 speeds are uncommon....

My $.02. I don't know what you use the tractor for. How long do you suppose it has been broken? It could be decades? Is this a "power wheelbarrow" or work horse? I would say use it and enjoy it, monitoring the crack and see if it gets worse. With that said, keep your eyes open for a parts tractor or just the housing for cheap $ and when the time is right, swap it out. Good Luck.

58frog,

If you are saying that the transmission housing is cracked, then you are probably in deep doo-doo. Maybe nose high with a tsunami on the way....

I had a 4 speed housing on my TLB that had cracks repaired before I got it and they cracked again before I got it. There are special methods to weld cast, but they require specific heat treatment. Like you need to heat it to 800F or so and weld it at that temp, then raise the temp to 1200f and follow other crazy specific thermal profiles. Today it's done in a computer controlled over. The old guys used to build a large fire and put the casting in the coals for an hour to heat. Then quick weld it with Ni rod, heat it again in a fire up to a dull red, then bury it in hot sand with the coals on top for 48 hours of slow cool.

Quotes I've gotten for fixing cast iron cracks are in the $150 to $200 per crack. That's for a clean bare degreased starting point. If they have to clean and degrease, add $100.

The bad thing is that you may (and probably do) have many more cracks that are just smaller and hard to see. My casing had 2 large cracks, I fixed them - but about a dozen more appeared. After banging my head on that for too long, I found a used casing with no cracks for $75. Du'h!

Well,I didnt see THIS problem when I purchased the tractor,I will be on the look out for a parts tractor .Someone tried welding it already but did a poor job. I figured it was a lost welding cause ,but it doesnt hurt to ask.
Thanks JB or responce

If it's an NAA, 1953 on up to 1958 (I think) 4 speed will swap in. You want an NAA or hundred series donor transmission (600, 800, 900). You DON'T want the newer 4 speed from the 601, 801 or 901.

Yours has the left brake going thru the same hole as the clutch. The later ones have that from the back under the differential.

John Smith in Illinois may have one if you are close. google "john smith and ford 8n". Otherwise ask around.
