Largest bushhog or what for a 63 2000 gas SOS?

It is beginning to look like I will be taking acre of 17 acres of former pasture land that has a good roll to it. Currently I have a 5 foot Rhino bushhog that is matched pretty good to the tractor until the grass gets hood high. First pass on about half of the property back in July was a job in the heat and I found it easier to run about 4' cuts in the really heavy stuff.
My question is, since I have no haying equipment, and basically would just like to keep the locust, blackberry, and broomstraw knocked back, should I be looking for a drum mower, a disc mower, a flail mower, or just accept that I will have alot of seat time with the 5 foot hog?

If I can ever get my 70 HP diesel running and can find a 7 or 8 foot bushhog for a reasonable amount then I figure I can whup it easily. But for now what can I get away with behind my little 35 HP 2000? The tractor runs strong, didn't overheat in 95* heat, and wore me out with the Armstrong steering so I can't complain about the power unit.

Suggestions, past experience gladly welcomed.

I have a '63 2000 gas 4 speed and use a 5' bush hog.Mostly mowing weeds but for a few acres of thick fescue. The tractor has plenty of power to pull a 6' which would have the advantage of being wide enough to cover my wheel tracks allowing closer cutting around obstacles and ditch banks.A lightweight 6' would be ideal for my situation. My tractor is also equipped with Armstrong power steering,so adding front weight to offset a heavy mower isn't in the plan.I'm thinking of getting a l/w six foot with two caster wheels, and just take smaller bites if needed in the thick stuff.Boley

I run a 1981 231 (2600) with a 6ft brush hog and it works great.

BUT, I only field mow with it. When the weeds get 5ft high it does start to load the motor some.

On shorter field grass it goes just fine. I would think if you are going to cut brush, a 6 footer might need a little more HP than you have.

Your 4 cylinder 2000 S-O-S should handle your 5 foot cutter very well in nearly any conditions. If it does not, something must be wrong with either the tractor or the mower.

I would not recommend a 6 foot cutter for your tractor unless you have a light 6 foot cutter and plan to use it in light cover.

A 63 2000 is a 4 cyl 134ci red tiger engine as used in a NAA, and 600/601 series.

MAX i see you using is a 6' mower. You will be able to catch a higher gear with a 5' mower.. etc. your choice.

My 8n handles a 5' mower in anything the axle will climb over.. though i do have to use nearly all the throttle to keep the ropms up to pto rpm level. Thus i think if your higher HP 134ci is in average shape or better.. it should run a 6.. etc.
