My 4400 backhoe was working fine, when suddenly won't move in any low gears forward or reverse, still goes forward in high gears.

Yours is definately a hanging valve.

Bob, It really depends on the cause. If you have a Ford shop manual and can follow the top cover R&R proceedure a stuck valve can be handled quite handily. If the band itself has come apart, it'll be a major tear down.
I would start with an attempt to adjust the band. If you can do that succesfuly, you likely have a stuck valve. You'll need a manual for the adjustment proceedure.

Well shoot let me see if I can cypher what you said anyway. Maybe you meant it has no reverse or forward low gears rather than it has no forward or reverse low gears????? If it goes to Neutral in R1, R2, 1,2,3 & 4 but operates in 5,6,7,8,9 & 10; you've lost band 3 engagement. If this is true my guess is that you've either hung a control valve or dropped a B3 strut. There are other possible causes, but I'd bet on one of those.Caution: It likely has no Park either!

Yes Larry no R1,R2,1,2,3&4 but operates in 5,6,7,8,9&10. Is this a big job to fix or can I with a service manual try by myself?
