The pump you pulled was it the one that bolts on to the bell housing on rear of engine. That drive gear drives off of the camshaft if it's like the 172 4 cyl diesel, like mine. I was told the that drive gear can spit teeth occasionally. See what these other posters have to say, but, this can't be good. Maybe a major engine transmission split and flywheel removal. Give us the exact engine model to be helpful. bjr

He said it's a 3 banger.... so unless it's got a jerk-a-matic or the tractor is a 4110 with a two stage clutch, then it's got the pump in the rear axle center housing and the oil supply for the PTO clutch comes off a tandem rear section of that pump.... hence the drive problem. That gear that he spun shoud be fixed to the engine's rotation at all times.

I have split the tractor at the eng. It has an 8 speed trans with a high/low shifter. (4 spd. and reverse for each) I'm shooting in the dark since I don't have a repair manual. I bought an 891 pg manual on-line last night but found that it was a massive parts manual. This will be helpful when I find out what is broken. After I split the trans/eng I inspected inside the bell housing and everything looks fine. I spun the inside trans. shafte and the trans. spun o.k. I then grabbed the shorter outside shaft and gave it a spin. It was noisey and the pump tried to spin. Is this supposed to be a solid outer part of the shaft that spins full time with the eng. and transfers rotation to the hydraulic pump? How should I proceed next?

Yes, the outer shaft will be the PTO shaft on that tractor. I'd pull the pump again and jamb the gear with a bar, then try to turn the input shaft again. I would also take a very very hard look at the shaft splines and the pressure plate splines... That's a fairly common wear point on the tractors I've had apart, but I haven't split my 4000 for that yet... although it is coming before much longer. I have changed that shaft and PP on my 3930 already. It hadn't quite failed, but I discovered it when I was in there for a tranny syncro.
If you find that the transmission shafts transmist power through the transmission then mabey remove the pressure plate from the flywheel and test fit it to the shaft and see if it's sloppy/loose. Try that and go from there.
