While slashing, in 5th gear tractor stopped dead. Engine still running, PTO still turning slasher, It was like the tractor had been thrown into park (P). No noises, bangs or otherwise, just stopped.Tractor will not move or select any gear. Any ideas, I have a mechanic that is investigating manuals etc but any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance from Australia.

Check to see of the tractor will roll either with it running or not. If it will roll not running the drive line disconnect may have come loose or broken etc. It is the little lever on the left side of the lift/differential housing just behind the left running board. It is held by a nut on a stud and must be turned just far enough to disconnect the drive. If you turn it too far it can become disengaged from the coupler and then you got a problem as it won't go back on it's own. Might have to remove the lift cover to gain access to get it back engaged. Another one of the great ideas of Ford!

G'day everyone, thanks for your input.
I personally, am mechanically challenged, But Rod is on the money with regard to the PTO being driven independently. Tom has broken the Language/Terminology barrier, exactly correct- Slashing is Mowing. With out seeing the tractor the mechanic has also suggested Clutch Shear,as Rod suggested, but will give the fluid pressure a go first. Thanks again, every bit helps, gives both me and the mechanic more to go on.

my SOS experience comes from older tractors where the PTO is part of the transmission. Where does the PTO get its hydraulic pressure? Does it come from an engine mounted pump? If so, it could also be that your torque limiting clutch in your flywheel failed.

BTW what is slashing?

Larry, as far as I know, where the 5000 S-O-S's gearset was basically flipped over in the transmission, it allowed for a straight through PTO drive shaft through the tranny. There is just a live shaft directly through the S-O-S which then in turn drives a standard 5000 back end where the hydraulics and PTO are fully contained in the rear axle center section.
I'd vote for some type of fluid/valve problem in this one, or even a sheared torque limiting clutch as I'd assume that the PTO is driven directly off a flywheel drive hub...

Larry, I am pretty sure that "slashing" is the English/Aussie word for American "shredding/mowing" as with a rotary cutter. Tom

Thanks LB, that gives me somewhere to start. Definately was not the traction disconnect, everthing was still locked up when stopped, used the disconnect to tow it from the paddock, thanks Larry

I'm not a selectospeed expert but did own a 5000 selecto. If you lose transmission hyd pressure they go into "Park". (The pto is seperate from the rest of the transmission on the 5000.) I would start by looking for a reason for pressure loss, such as low oil level, plugged filter or screen or failed pump.

have you checked the traction disconnect for disengagement?
