ford 640 rear hub diagrams

Anybody got an illustration of the differential-hub assemblies for a 640? I'm trying to replace leaking seal components and fix the brakes. Pictures that I have don't show whats in the hub. -How does the hub bearing get lubed if there is an oil seal at the end of the diff.housing ?
-Whats the procedure to pull the shafts out of the outer hub ?
-Is the 2.75 x 2" oil seal in the diff. housing the outer or inner seal ?
Too many questions, I know. One day I'll get a shop manual. Until then anybody got one they can scan ? Thanks!!!

Thanks for the picture Glen. That really helped. The CNH picture didn't show the outer seal.

Anybody got any suggestions on removing the collar with out the special tooling?

I got hold of a manual last nite. #29 has got to go, that's where the fun starts.
Special tools are required. Operation involves drilling two 1/2" holes with a special holding fixture and then splitting the collar with a SPLITTING CHISEL. Then the shaft has to be pressed out of the bearings.

I was puzzled how the bearings got lube since the outer shaft seal stopped the diff. oil at the trumpent end. They're packed just like the front wheel bearings!!!

***New question. . . New collar, pt. 29 must be heated to 800 degs F. and reinstalled over the bearings/cup assy. As it cools it locks everything in place. Wouldn't that burn the grease up?

If you do a search of the archives there are many posts about removing the collar. I recall someone building his own tool for removing the collar. It still requires driling the holes and using a chisel. You don't need a special chisel just a good cold chisel. Be careful not to drive it into the axle. If you have a CNH shop in your area they may have the tool and will loan it to you. Or, you can do as I did and use a torch to cut partially through the collar and then use a chisel to split the collar. You MUST be careful to not cut into the axle. For reinstallation and peace of mind I had my CNH shop reinstall the seal, bearing and collar. It cost $150 for both axles. I figured it was a good investment. Hope this helps you.

Regarding the heated collar, though the bearings and grease may get hot it won't be sufficient to hurt anything. That's how Ford did it.

Here's a diagram for you from a Master Parts Manual. I believe you'll want to look at the inset diagram. I believe that design was used on the 600's and 800's. As for lubrication of the bearing, it is packed with grease before you assemble the axle. There is a steel collar that is heated and then put on the axle that retains the backing pplate, bearing and bearing retainer. When it cools it won't move. There is an inner seal that is installed in the axle trumpet and an outer seal in the bearing retainer.

To remove the outer bearing retainer you must first unbolt it from the axle trumpet. Once the bolts have been removed you can pull the axle out. The brake backing plate, bearing retainer and axle will come out in one piece. You can then access the inner seal. To access the outer seal you must remove the collar. There is a special tool for splitting the collar(if you can find one) Or, you can drill through the collar on two sides and then split with a chisel; or if you are good with a torch you can cut part way and then use a chisel to split the collar. You MUST be careful not to cut into the axle. You can probably count on replacing the bearing and race if you use the torch.

There should also be some shims between the bearing retainer and axle trumpet that are used for axle end play adjustment. Be careful with these. You may want to get a dial gauge to check your end play and adjust accordingly. The corect end play is .002-.016". Torque on the bearing retainer nuts is 130-150 ft.lbs. The shims can be purchased at CNH. Reassemble in reverse order.

I think thats an 8n rear axel diagram, the hundred series do not have an outboard nut on the axel

The diagram in my MPC seems to show a seal outboard of the bearing it's # 4233

that is about a 19$ book, and you can get it to cover naa thru 900/1801 ( cen get it right here as far as I know.

Amazingle enough the CNH website shows this diagram in brilliant detail... check out parts 25 thru 29.. should shed some light on your mystery.

click on ag, then north america, then parts search, then search for parts. a window spawns, then type in 640, search.. choose the ag all purpose tractor, then choose rear axle.. etc..

Looking at the CNH...I ordered an outer seal online from Unger. I thought it was part 2 on the CNH drwg.which on my 640 has a 2.75 bore and a 2" shaft. I received a Tisco part that fits in a 3.5 bore and a 2.5" shaft. Am I mis-interperating what the outer seal is ? By the way, How does the lube get to the outer axle bearing with the seal #2 in place ? I'd like to pull the axle, pt. 23 out and inspect the bearings and replace gskt part 25. Any idea how to separate 23,26,27,28 and 29. I expect that once 29 is removed, it all comes apart. How about a pull against part 26 with some sort of gear puller, pulling 26,28 and 29 off the shaft, part 23?

Glen bet me to it.. but yeah.. it looks like once 29 is gone, it comes apart.

I'd pack the bearings with grease on reinstall.. etc.

doublecheck your axle trumpets to make sure they are the correct ones.. though the do sound like the 600 series.. etc..

29 is the collar mentioned in my previous post. Once it is removed everything else will come apart.
