I have a ford 501 mower. The other day I was mowing and hit a fence post. Well the main support beam (Pipe about 3 in.dia.)bent.As it turns out the previous owner had disabled the swinging ability of the arm and also damaged the arm.His method of repair was to poorly weld a patch over the cracked arm.Well then now its my turn I removed the patch staightened the arm did a thorough job of welding and reasembling.now comes the problem.I took it out to try it out but cant even mow light grass without the arm swinging away.It seems to me there may be more to this spring return than i know about is there some pics or info that any of you guys out there have .Is there some kind of a latch that breaks away and then relatches

Here is a link to the New Holland website. Maybe you also need a manual. They are available through this site also.

Rick,

There definitely is a latch that secures the cutter bar in the cutting position. The latch is called a breakout latch. It allows the upper frame to pivot on one side so that the cutter bar will release and pivot out behind the mower if an obstruction is encountered while mowing. The breakout latch rides in a breakout guide and the latch actually latches onto a roller when the bar is in the cutting position.

Unless the previous owner has hacked it up, the operation of the latch should be pretty obvious.
If you have a New Holland dealer near you, you might want to drop by there and look at the exploded parts manual for a picture of the parts.

Good luck,

Tom in TN
