When I bought my '58 961 it came with power steering that wasn't hooked up. All of the parts were there and appeared to be in good shape but there was no belt. Last night I picked up a belt (our local auto parts store had it listed in his book and had the belt in stock) and went to work on the power teering to see what the problem was. This appears to be a factory unit that has a large reservoir attached to a pump that is tucked up under the gas tank and an external hydrualic cylinder attached to the steering arm (sort of like the set up on my '70 Corvette). To access the pump and reservoir I had to pull a pin out of the adjusting arm and pivot the pump and reservoir to the side to get them from under the gas tank. The reservoir cover has a clamp around the outside of the cover that seals it to the reservoir body - if this doesn't soumd like a factory unit let me know. The reservoir was empty of fluid and when I put some in and turned the pump by hand, fluid shot out of a hole in the back of the pump - the hoses are all hooked to the pump and the hole appears to be about an eigth inch in diameter and drilled in the back of the pump body, angling downward, directly behind the pump shaft. What is the purpose of the hole - is it for an overpressure valve? If so can the volve be replaced? It looks like the power steering rebuilt kits that I have sean just contain gaskets, would they have what I need to fix this problem?

Any help would be appreciated. I do need the power steering since the tractor has a loader mounted on the front with a hydrualic dump bucket and it is tough to turn the tractor quickly while brush hogging with all of the weight on the front! Thanks.

Kevin

Thanks - I'll look on some of the Mustang forums also. Nothing else seems to leak in the system, but it litterally squirts out that hole in the back of the pump. Most of the rebuild kits I looked at were gasket only kits and I wasn't sure if that would take care of whatever problem I had.

Sounds like a stock P/S setup to me. If the rebuild doesnt work, search the boards on this topic. This is the same or similar pump used in the same vintage Ford Mustangs, if I remember correctly.
