What do I have- Ford 4000 diesel?

I just bought a Ford 4000 with a 4 cylinder diesel and a 5 speed transmission from my uncle. He doesn't know what year model it is other than it's old. It has a round emblem in the grille with the Ford script over a sheave of wheat that looks very much like the emblem on the Golden Jubilee. Can anyone guess about when this tractor was made?
Also, it jumps out of 3rd gear. Is this a major problem or fairly easy to fix? (I have experience working on automobiles but this is my first tractor). All advice is appreciated.

The 4 cylinder 4000's were built 1952 -64. Both gas and diesel. All had live hyd. and some had live PTO.
Enjoy your tractor.

RWK, I am sure it was a typo but the first generation 4000's were built from 62 to 64. Alan the early 4000's have close to the same tin work as the older 600, 800, 900 and later 01 models. The 4000's have no emblem on the hood like you discribe, it has a half moon on the top of the hood with lines in it. Sounds like the emblem you are discribing is off an older tractor. The serial number should be on the flat behind the starter right above the implement attachment holes on the side of the bellhousing. After you find the numbers go to the site on the side of this page and go to the serial number section and you should be able to find out what you have. You might have a hybrid- two or more tractors put together. Good luck and if you have more ?s just ask. Greg NE

Tony, thanks for the correction. I guess I have always seen the books show 64 as the last year and my Dad has a 65 5000 and I knew they changed the styles then. Please keep up the good work, I really enjoy reading your responses to some of the questions on this board. Thanks Greg NE

Hi Greg , There is alot of guys who don't know production went that far into 1965 , The only places that info is availabe is Ford literature I have never seen it anywhere else myself . You could have bought both 2000/4000 3 cyls. and 4cyls. new in the same year , now would'nt that be cool to find them all the same year restore them and then take to the shows , almost guarenteed to start an arguement that they went available at the same time . Thanks Tony

I think you have a pretty good tractor, from what i have read it should have 42 horsepower. I hope someone answers your question about it popping out of 3rd gear as I have a 851D and it does the same thing going downhill..Lee

Hi Lee and Alan , Popping out of third and reverse is very common on these transmissions , it could that 3rd and reverse gears are worn heavily and will not stay engaged with the slider and the fork , there could also be excessive endplay in the trans. main shafts , causing them to pop out because they do not fully engage , the shift rails and forks could be worn or out of adjustment , causing them not be fully engaged either . No matter what it could get expensive and could be a major job , get the manuals pull the top cover off and check the shift rails and the endplay first. Thanks Tony Jacobs
