I hope someone can help me with this one. I have a ford 172 gas block, can it be used for a diesel? and can I use the crank from a 144D in the 172? I basicly have 2 144D engines with trashed blocks, and a 172 gas block. I know I will need pistons, but will everything else change over? the gas block does not have a balancer, the diesel one does. any help would be appreceated Jim

This is kind of round about, but I know a guy that knows someone who has two Diesel 144s. Don't know their condition or anything and one could even be a 172, but if you are intrested will try to get a phone no. for you.

I have the manual for these engines, and the stroke is the same. I don,t know if the balance would be differant or not. Also, I looked over the two blocks, and they are identical in every way, exept the last letter in the casting no. is differant. the 172 has a J.and the 172 does not have the balancer, which supposedly was optional in both gas and diesel engines. Does anyone have parts for a 172D floating around that they want to sell? Thanks, Jim

I have a 172D block, actually I have a complete engine(in parts). I would sell everything except the crank.
The balancer was not an option in the gas engine.

Hi James , No gas and Diesel blocks are different , No 144 and 172 cranks are different strokes , and 144 diesels are very expensive to rebuild , best bet is find a 172 diesel engine to replace your blown up 144 engine . Thanks Tony Jacobs
