Removing the rear piston on my 961 - through the bottom??

I need to pull the rear piston on my 1958 961 to remove some debris from the cylinder (don't ask - not one of my more illustrious mechanical moments). I had originally planned to pull the head, which is fairly invloved since I have to pull all of the sheet metal, gas tank etc. Plus since I would have it all apart it would be a good time to do a valve job, clean and seal the gas tank, etc. Unfortunately I need the tractor now and don't have to time to do all of this work. Last night I got to thinking and was wondering if there was enough room to remove the piston by dropping the oil pan, rotating the crank to the side and dropping the piston out the bottom. Does anybody know if this can be done - I would hate to take it all apart and find out that the piston would not fit past the crank. Thanks.

Kevin

Ouch! My imagination is showing me all sorts of nasty things inside that cylinder. Let's hope they stay imaginary!

If it's some sort of metal debri or porcelin from a spark plug that fell into the cylinder try a GOOD vacuum cleaner system and reduce the hose size to get it into the 14mm plug hole and work it around until you pick it up in the cleaner.... this really works (if your lucky like I was) when I used this trick to remove some broken porcelin from a damaged plug extraction. Get the piston all the way up to start with -- it would certainly help to know just what "amount" in terms of pieces you would want to remove in order to get all that is there. GOOD LUCK TO YOU -- I've been there.

While dealing with starting problems I stupidly was using a small triangular file to measure piston height while trying to establish TDC to check timing. I bumped the starter too hard and snapped the file off. I carefully turned the engine by hand, using a wrench on one of the front pulley bolts, and raised the piston up to where I could see inside. I then used a small magnet to try and fish out pieces - they didn't come out real easily for some reason. I got one chunk out along with a lot of small particles but there is more still in there that I haven't gotten. The bad thing is that before using the file I momentarily visualized this happening before deciding it would - a wooden dowel wood have been much better than a hardened steel file!

DO NOT TRY IT! It won't fit, even if the crank was out. Won't clear the bearing webs. You DON'T want to have to try to get the rings compressed to get it back into the cylinder from the bottom! They have to come out the top.

Thanks! Thats what I wanted to know, its what I was afraid I would find out but saved me the time and effort of trying it. I bought a nice little NAA last weekend to use until I get the 961 back on the road, the only problem is that I can't use the loader that I have on the 961 on the NAA unless I get the proper dual control hydrualic cover for the NAA since it is diferent from the one on my 961.

I don't think there is room, but have never tried it.
At this point, what have you got to lose? Try it and let us know.
