Just took the 850 home. The guy I bought it from had done most everything I had planned to do execpt swop out the Hydro / Tranny fluid.

I duetifly bought a FO-20 manual and got it today. When checking the "sizes - Capacities - clearences" section it said, "Hydrolic Resivoir - quarts 8 (quarts) refenence subsection #4.".

Subsection four states, "on models with both hydrolic system and PTO, leave hydrolic resivoir empty.".

What gives? Does the 850 share a trans / hydro system like the 9N, 2n, 8N tractors? This tractor has live hydro, why would you leave the hydro res. empty/

Very puzzled.

Andy

New Holland dealer told me to put 134D in all three fills also(Model 640). 134D is a 10/30WT oil. I bought the oil and did this. At the same time I ordered a reprint of the original owners manual, took about a month to get. It gave a speck for the hyd oil which the 134D probably meets but it clearly said to put medium pressure 80/90 WT gear oil in the trans and rear end. There is a big difference in these oils. Heavier gear oil makes sence to me for the trans and rear end. I am going to change to gear oil in my tractor before I use it next.
Good Luck

One thing to keep in mind, if you have a rear seal that is prone to leak, axle or pto, the 134 will leak quicker than gear oil, for obvious reasons.

Just a suggestion -> Shelf the I&T manual and spring for the $60 for the manual from New Holland. MUCH, MUCH better, and TONS more details and pics.

Good Luck!

I got a FoMoCo reprint shop manual off ebay for about $25 (including shipping). Does NH have one that's better now? I agree that the I&T manual (I have that one too) is inferior.

Your 850 has separate trans, hyd, and rear axle reserviors. Total capacity is around 6 gallons. I am not familiar with the quote from the manual, but do not leave any reservior empty. NH 134D hydraulic fluid (or its equivalent) is the current spec oil for all 3 fills.
