Tune-up kit question

I'm getting ready to put new points and condenser into my 3000. I've got the tune-up kit from the NH dealer, and have read the instructions in the service manual and the FO-31 manual, and I think I understand what goes where and how to adjust things, but there's one thing I don't understand. In the tune-up kit is what appears to be a little squirt tube of oil. Where am I supposed to put the oil? Does this go onto the little piece of felt-like stuff on the end of the static arm of the points? I'm guessing this must be so, as this would allow the oil to lubricate the cam, reducing wear where the cam pushes against the points. Or maybe not. Advice greatly appreciated.

Oil the felts on a fergy,but sparingly, so you are probably on the right track.

Bob,

The only other thing I'd mention is that you want to be sure to use a highly magnetic screw driver or one that mechanically holds the screw to the end of the tip of the screw driver when removing and installing the little screws on the points and the condensor. It is really easy to lose those screws down into the distributor if you're not really careful.

Also, tighten the screws but be very careful not to overtighten them. They are going through the distributor plate which is about 1/8 inch thick. It's easy to strip the threads in the plate.

One last thing, the nut on the points where the ground wire and condensor wire attach is very small. I'm not sure what size it is on the 3000 but I've had some distributors where it is a very odd size, like, 11/32 or something like that. Make sure that you have some small wrenches available to loosen that nut. You can determine exactly what size you need by checking the nut on the new points before you start the installation.

Ditto what jim said. I like to out a smear of grease on the cam, and then a glob on the leading rdge of the rubbing block.

make sure you keep it away from the btrskrr contacts themselves..

You guessed it... except that the "grease" is to be installed on the distributor cam lobes -- a small amount on each flat will do the trick... Eventually (as soon as the engine starts) the cam grease ends up on the felt strip you refer to and as the cam goes around when the engine operates the grease is then re- distributed on to the cam once again - as it is needed, and as the felt and points wear down... Just remember when installing the points to set them with the high point of the cam lobe on the rubbing block (where it meets the points and opens them) this is where and when you use your feeler gauges. If you have a manual it should clearly show this illustration, or, there is plenty of resource at your local library, tractor suppy, nearby tractor dealer or NAPA parts; as well as online google searchs. After you install the points and the engine starts okay, more likely then not you will have to set/adjust the timing with a timimng light.
