The crankcase breather/oil filler has visible blue smoke coming from it only in colder weather until the engine approaches normal operating temperature. In warm weather it isn't noticeable. This is a well worn '63 2000 that uses 1/2 quart of 15w40 per 100 hour season doing easy bush hogging and box blade work.It also smokes from the exhaust pipe a little after long idles.Assume that's bad valve stem seals. What is the crankcase blow by only when cold a sign of?Normal,I hope as Polly Anna would.

how do i change the oil? in reply to Boley, 11-10-2007 19:36:08
Boley, is that a gasoline (non-diesel) 1963 ford "2000" tractor you"ve got there? If so, could you read me the model number off of your oil filter? I need to change the oil and filter on mine, but the numbers are illegible on mine. Also, where do i put the oil in, how much of it, what kind, and which bolt is the drain bolt? (oddly, the manual doesn"t mention this stuff)

In colder weather, the internal clearances in the cylinder are larger and it takes a while longer to get to operating temperature, where the clearances are near design. As a result, there maybe some blow by during cold weather warm up. Since it goes away when the engine is at operating temperature, you don"t have any major problem. it"s just a sign of some normal wear. Sitting at idle for some time and seeing a little blue smoke in the exhaust can be caused by some valve guide wear and stem seal wear allowing oil leakage to the the intake valves. The intake is at max vacuum under these conditions so it will highlight stem seal/valve guide wear by smoking some.
A half a quart of oil loss in a 100 hours of operation is indicative of your engine showng some wear but I certainly wouldn"t worry about it"s mechanical condition. Go out and enjoy your 2000!

Blow-by coming from the oil filler cap is mostly likely from worn piston rings. However with it using only 1/2 qt. per 100 hrs., I wouldn't worry about it.

Yep its getting old like me so yep it will do that. To slow it down some you can either switch to say a 20W50 or go with a 30W oil and that will help a good bit
