My nephew 640 will steer EZ to the right, But to the left it feel like it is in a bind.

Solved my problem for now. Refilled gear box with oil (bone dry), started seeping PB Blaster on the steering wheel spline, reset the toe in (had 1-1/4") and reset the set screw that governs end play on the sector shaft.

Feels like I now have power steering instead of powerful.

The source of the leak was the left seal on the sector shaft. Must have taken years to leak out, it's not leaking, but seeping just enough to hold dust.

Going to let it go for now, and probably repair it early next year.

Must be an epidemic, I've got the same model 640 with the same symptoms, but I may have made the problem worse. I thought I could get rid of excess play in the steering wheel by tightening the adjusting screw. After reading this post and looking at the manual I will revisit the adjusting screw.

My short term band-aid is to check and fill gearbox and move the adjusting screw back where it came from and see what happens.

The steering column has about 1/16" axial play in it....don't think that's excessive at this point. Only thing I have a problem with right now is I think the top bearing is dry, I think I heard it squeek once today. Since I don't have my puller with me I may try a shot of lube up near the top of the column and hope it makes it to the bearing. Manual shows it to be a bushing rather than a bearing.

Hope this all makes sense, and welcome any input on my game plan.

They are Thrust Bearings and they are expensive. in reply to Michaels Dad, 11-13-2007 17:28:44
The top thrust bearing went out due to lack of lube in my 861D. The steering wheel and shaft screwed right out of the box. The bearing and race are about $30. Someone sells a teflon bushing to replace the bearing for about $10 but I've heard it's a waste of your time to put it in. There's a mighty heavy load on that bearing when you're turning and teflon is not up to strength.
Keeping that upper bearing (there's another exact duplicate in the bottom the box) lubed is the problem. When you add fluid through the filler port it runs through the bearing and covers it. If you have a leak in the sector seals the bearing eventually runs dry and fails. I don't thik you can just replace the filler plug with a grease zerk because the grease will follow the path of least resistance as it is pumped in and the p-o-l-r is up the steering shaft tube instead of down through the bearing. If I ever have to replace my upper bearing again I am going to drill and tap the steering box below the upper bearing and put a zerk in there. That way when I pump in grease it will be forced up through the bearing.

I'll bet the steering wheel climbs and falls a bit in reference to the steering box when it does this.

Typically this behavior is indicitave of a worn out upper thrust bearing in the steering box that has dies from lack of lube.

Time to get a manula.. you will need to remove the steering wheel, pull enough tin to get at the box, pull the cover, and check on that top bearing.... if it had disintigrated.. you will either have to fish all the rollers out with a telescoping magnet.. or pull the sector shafts and wormshaft and clean the box out, then check that lower thrust bearing and race. ( check out the upper race int he top of the box as well...

If yuo get that far.. might as well check sector arm seals..e tc.. if bad repalce.. then refill with gear oil.. if she still leaks.. put a zerk in place of the fill plug and pump in some )3 jd cornhead grease to keep her topped off.
Could also be a bad spindle bearing.. or really excessive sector backlash.

jack the front end up and take a looksee.
