Hi I just bought a ford 3000 which I feel is a early model because it has a generator not a alternator, but what I am wondering is what fluid do I fill the power steering tank with?, a lite hydraulic oil or power steering fluid, I know some of the early model used Hydro oil. my reservoir is in front the motor near the raditor over the generator. thanks for the help. Bob

3000's used a generator all the way through production. Alternators first appeared on 3600's.

I use ATF in my 841 and have since I got it. If your pump is like the one on my 841 I found it didn't seem to like the Hyd fluid that I tried one time. Plus ATF cost a lot less then the other stuff

you can use power steering fluid, or automatic transmission fluid, or hydraulic fluid or the tractor rated hydraulic fluid... all will work well.. i prefer the atf fluid as it has the red dye and is easier to tell if from oil or hydraulic fluid when it leaks... in an emergency you can use regualar motor oil but it should only be used short term...

never never never never never run the pump dry or it will be forever ruined...

did you get the part about never run the pump dry???

thanks,, hth.. bill

Ford/NH 134D is the recomended fluid. Any hy/trans or TDH type fluid will do. Power steering fluid was also recomended at the time... BAsically any decent light to mid weight hydraulic fluid would do in that system.
