third party imageI just got a small 3pt backhoe to use on my 1967 4000 Ag, Gas. I currently have a Koyker FEL with a subframe. Do I really need to create a another subframe to hook the backhoe up to. If so could someone give me some help with were/how I should tie this subframe into the tractor?

TIA

Wedge

Ok I forgot to mention that it's a 6" bh with 2 1/2 cylinders.
I know I'm asking for it.. But I do plan on using it to remove some stumps. Ya I know thats the hardest thing on the hoe/tractor. I'll also be using it to trench in clay/dirt.

I was reading another thread a few days back and they said that it is better to place the front bucket on the ground and lift some of the load off the front tires, same with the back using the legs of the BH.

If the weather is ok this weekend I'll go out side and take a closer look at how I might be able to tie the subframe to the tractor. The FEL uses two sets of frames/brackets on each side of the tractor. There are pre-drilled and tapped holes at the very front of the tractor and about mid way between the front and rear tires. I thought about hanging another bracket off the midway point. From there I'll just have to see what I can tie it to at the back of the tractor.

I checked and my memory is going! The front mount position isn't the 3' I wrote, but more like 12-18" forward of the axle. (oops)

A 6' hoe is fairly small and not all that powerful. Well, not in terms of tractor breaking strength! It is sure more powerful than a man and a shovel. If you use it mostly for trenching work in softer soils and take care with the stump work, it will probably be ok for a very long time. As you expose the stump's roots, use an ax to cut the roots. Don't power them until they break.

If you use it a lot, you may want to spend the time to make a sub-frame with a 4pt mount. For now, just use it and see.

HD tractors with dedicated hoes will be seen with the bucket in the full dump position lifting the front off the ground and the stabilizers lifting the rear wheels off. They have a full frame that is engineered to do that. Most small hoes don't and a 3pt hoe fer sure does not. just use enough down force to remove the bulge from the tires, but leave the tires on the ground. That will be more stabil and twist the tractor less.

I agree, use it with care and watch what happens. a 6' hoe is really small on a 4000 tractor. You might be fine. Enjoy it.

What size hoe, how much do you plan to use it and what type of soils are you using it in? I used a 6' 3 pt Woods hoe on my 5600 in gravel and it was a piece of cake. Yes, the tractor was WAY too big for the hoe, but it was all I had except a spade shovel. I also watched a guy break his 2120 Ford at the tranny bolts with a 7' hoe pulling rocks in real rough soil. It's pretty easy to put a couple of rods/pipe/channel from the bottom of the hoe to the mounting frame of the FEL under the tractor and I think it will tighten up the feel quite a bit. As noted below, the 3 pt hoes do rattle quite a bit, but they can really do quite a bit of work if you use them correctly. John Deere makes a great little removeably hoe that mounts under the dreawbar with a custom bracket and the front ties to a couple of eyes you can weld to the FEL frame. You can probably google it and see some pictures of how they mount to get ideas for yours.

BH's will stress a tractor severely. The amount of stress is directly related to the size, power and reach of the hoe. A large powerful hoe with a long reach will stress the tractor more than a small one.

Ford used 2-1/2"x6"x3/8" channel for the subframe on the tractors with hoe's. The bottom hoe mounts then slid into the channel at the rear and were bolted to the channel and the bottom of the axle trumpets. The channel went forward either was part of the FEL mounting. The top mount was from a spot about 3' forward of the axle and rotated down on to the top. It was held in place by a threaded rod welded to a member that mounted just behide the lower mounts.

Tractors of your vintage would have had a 10' or larger hoe and needed extra support.

If your "small" hoe is a 7' or so one you may be ok for occasional use. Even so, I would spend some time and tie it into a solid mounting. 3pt mounted hoes are typically looser and feel sloppier than a mounted hoe. Also, 3pt hoes have been known to stress tractors to the point of cracking transmissions or differentials. It's fairly rare, but the greater the use and the more powerful the hoe, the greater the risk.

HTH,

jb
