Hey guys, I need a few thoughts here. This loader has a Gresen valve assembly for the FEL. There are 3 spools, stacked vertically. The top spool controls the bucket, the bottom spool controls the ?arms? (lifts the bucket) and contains the 'float' detent. the center spool pins into the bottom spool and moves in-snyc w/the bottom spool.
I am replacing the Quad rings in this unit. I would like some feedback on 'tips and tricks' for doing this.
upon opservation I notice how sharp these spools are. I don't want to cut the new Q-rings upon installation. I have read about parchment paper to protect the ring. Don't think this will help in this application.
Q). Should I just install all of the Q-rings and then install the spools? or,

Should I install just the Q-rings on the lever (driver) side, Disassemble the centering spring/s on the spools (as these spools are hollow and have assemblies on the ends), then slide the spool/s in, past the seat for the (groove in the valve body), install the new Q-ring (front of the tractor side), silde the spool back to center of the valve body, install the centering springs, detent etc and be happy?

Sorry for the long question...sl

Yes this helps. The tractor is on our property about an hour away. I have most of my tools and such there. But, it's remote and if I need anything I'll have to stop and pick it up before I get there. Thanks again...sl
PS, throw another log on the fire....

I've got a 4500 and the end of the spool (where the lever attaches to it) is almost completely worn through. Just curious, what does ford charge for the new spools?

Hey Murn, How's things in Ga. Has it froze there yet? Santa Ana's (Devil wind) here, That's what fueled the wildfires 2 weeks ago, and last year, and the year before yada yada yada.

Thanks for your reply, Have you performed this yourself? How did you compress the springs? Thanks in advance....sl

It's colder than a whitches here in the mtn's. Twenty four degrees this morning and now at about 3:30 pm it's 46 and the wind blowing. Don't think this is the devil's wind but the N. wind.

Yes, I have replaced the seals in many different valves including this 740 loader self leveling three spool. The springs are not that strong. If memory serves me right, only one,the self leveling spool will have a snap ring. The others will have a screw type device. Hope this helps a little,if not post back and I will ask our shop guy Tues.

Whatever you do,do not install both rings and slide the spool thru them. Like you say the spools are very sharp and will shave off a bit of the seal. Remove the spool and spring, install one seal, slide the spool thru the valve and seal just far enough so you will have room to install the second one. Lube the seals first.
