I have been working on a ford 5000 with sos. I replaced both upper and lower cables. The upper wheel cable shifts very smooth in the housing before putting it on the tractor. The lower cable seems like something isn't right when changing gear by pushing and pulling the lower cable. But if I go to the bottom side of the tractor and use a screwdriver to turn the cable wheel trunnion or put a wreach on the hex of the camshaft assembly it shifts very smooth. Thanks Kerry

I had the same problem on my 5000 SOS in reply to Kerry Hayes, 11-25-2007 12:13:30
When I got my 1967 5000 SOS about 2 years ago it was having a problem (and it still does) engaging R1, R2, 9 & 10. I changed the filter, fluid and adjusted the bands hoping for an easy fix which didn't happen. I e-mailed Larry about the problem and he confirmed that according to the diagnostics chart it was most likely a Clutch 1 problem but he said it was possible that the gasket between the valve body and the distributor was leaking. I pulled the valve body and replaced the gasket. I don't recall exactly what happened now but I remember that I had one heck of a time getting the shift cable back in place and I recall removing and reinstalling the valve body a couple of times. Any way, once I got it all back together it wouldn't shift smoothly. The shift lever would reach a certain point in its travel and it would hang up. I could force it to continue but I knew something was wrong because it had shifted smoothly before I removed the valve body. I pulled the valve body out again and turned the cable wheel by hand. I could feel the spot where the wheel got hard to turn and I observed that at that spot there was one piston that was being pushed into its bore by its cam. I disassembled the valve body and polished that piston with very fine emery cloth. I reassembled the valve body and the cable wheel turned freely so I put it all back together once again. The shift lever moved freely again. Why did that one piston decide to get sticky? I don't have the slightest idea because I didn't do anything except remove and replace the valve body.
I still have the R1, R2, 9 & 10 problem so I'm looking at a rear split in the future to see what's wrong with C1.

I could see that causing a problem. To much room might lend to kinking and to the joint wanting to pop out and bind.

The conduit is made from a brake line that I bought at auto parts Store. The cable is going
pretty free before scewing it in the cam wheel.
It dose seem like something is binding.I"m not sure what to do. Thanks Kerry

Larry
I was checking the ID of the conduit there is about about .042 diffrent between the factory
and the one I"m using.Could that be the problem?
Upper and Lower are made from this sizes.
Factory .190 ID
Using .232 ID brake line
THanks Kerry
