Firstly, I am new to this forum but finding it very helpful. I have a somewhat lengthy backstory about a project I need some tips on.

I am trying to repair/partially restore a tractor for a friend for Christmas. He has never maintained the machine since he bought it second hand more than 25 years ago. No oil/filter change. Nothing. I want to get it in decent running order for him as a present. He doesn"t know anything about my plans, and more disappointingly the tractor, other than he thinks it is a 1955-56.

I have found this info on the tractor:
front of tractor body says 600
found above and behind the starter - hard to read - 610 or 640 but not 641. Since the tractor has a 4 speed, PTO and 3 point pickup then surely it has to be 640. - under that I see a diamond - then a blurry number, maybe 7 - then 4376 diamond. so 74376 makes it a 1955
right side of engine case - EAE-6015-F
on top of valve cover - blurry - 310098

As far as I can tell this info points towards a 1955 640. A problem arises as the tractor is blue. I cant tell if it is originally blue but the owner says it may have been painted. He remembers gray which would make sense. I thought blue did not come around until 1963?

The tractor is in bad shape. A few details are wide front as opposed to tricycle. Rubber wheels. Not offset. Don"t know how to tell if it is cartridge or spin on oil filter. I haven"t removed the case to see what I expect to be cartridge. I can remove the center bolt but I cant tell how to remove the case. Exhaust is rusted to pieces. Thinking of replacing entire manifold and exhaust. Carb needs rebuild, electronics need replacing, hydraulics are shot and fluid is in dire need of replacing, and the tank needs a good cleaning/sealing. Have you had any luck sealing tanks?

Any tips on a positive identification would be great. Any general help or suggestions is greatly appreciated as this is the first time I really put some effort into restoring/repairing tractors. Thanks ahead for the help. Thanks for listening.

If oil filter cartridge style.. try napa 1004

if spin on fram ph8a, motorcraft fl1a.. and i believe napa 1515, or preferably, a 1452 should fit.

Over on the left side of this page under "Galleries" click on "Tractor Photos". Then type "640" in the search box, hit GO and you will see many photos of 640's in their original red and gray paint scheme.

The filter sounds like a cartridge. NAPA caries the replacements element. Undo the bolt and the housing will come off.

Under the tractor are 4 large diameter drain plugs.

Front is engine 6 qts of 10w-30 or 15w40
next is the transmission 6 qts of 80w90
next is the hydraulics 8 qts of trans / hydraulic fluid (134 spec or UDT generic)
Last is the differential 8 qts of 80w90.

There is no electronics, unless they were owner added and it doesn't sound like he was that type of owner. Just points, condenser, cap & rotor. You can go to electronics (6v or 12v) under $100. Available from this site.

Get new plugs &wires.

Then take off the air cleaner and clean it out good. Not just the lower cup, but the whole dern thing needs to be cleaned. You can soak it in some STRONG simple green or other grease cutter. Use a garden hose to flush it out, then blow it dry and wet down with oil. The cup is filled to the line with oil. (10w30).

You can get carb rebuild kits and new manifolds from this site too.

The seal kits like Kreem and others from Eastwood work well (IF) you clean and degrease the inside of the tank well. You can have a good radiator shop seal the tank for about 2x the cost of materials.

thanks for all the info. Would it be a safe guesss that it was changed to 12v if it has a regular 12v car battery in it? The distro has points and I plan on changing that for sure. I found out the advantages of that from th old VWs we rebuild.

Will the oil filter cover just come off with a little persuasion? Do you happen to know the part number for the filter?

All of the pics of I looked at (~55-56 640s) look exactly like the tractor I have. Does that really mean anything? Did they change the look all that much between 55-57 to 63-65ish?

Yes, the oil filter canister will come off with very little persuasion once you remove the bolt. Have a pan under. Tractor had grey sheet metal and red cast parts originally. The diamond at end of number means cast iron sleeves. One way to tell if converted properly to 12 volts is battery will be negative ground and the small wire from the coil to the distributor should be from the negative side of the coil. Could have been six volts originally (and positive ground), and changed over, and if the coil wire was changed it gives a hint that they did it right, not just slapping a battery in it. Tractor will run either way, but having correct polarity on coil wire makes for hotter spark, and like I said indicates maybe they put in correct voltage regulator, etc. (hopefully).

From what you posted its a 640, the color is wrong but I'm not sure if it should be red or gray. The work master was red and the power master is gray and red. But I don't know the 640s well enough to tell you what color it should be but I know 100% that it should not be blue
