I have a motor oil leak that I have not been able to solve. Have replaced rear main seals and cap side seals twice. Bearing Good. Oil leaks down bottom of cap and from holes on both sides of fly wheel. Any suggestions as to what the problem is and how to repair it?

Are you pulling the crankshaft to replace the seals?

Does it have the original rope seals or does it have the replacement neoprene rubber seals?

No, I did not pull the crank. It had the original rope seals. I was told by the tractor parts supply that I had to go back with the original type of rope seal, not the neoprene, or it would leak. I attached the new top rope seal to a piece of mechanics wire and pulled it through, of course the bottom seal was just placed into the cap.

I have a leak at the same general area in my 1954 NAA Ford. I was thinking about adding some automatic transmission seal leak repair fluid to the transmission. I once used a transmission fluid seal restorer in a Plymouth with an automatic transmission and it repaired the leaking seals in that transmission. I figured if that didn't stop the problem, I would add an oil additive that is intended to restore seals and see if that stops it. I have a question on another topic. I recently installed a new Carb. on the NAA, and now the tractor has a tendency to lope (rev up and slow as the governor kicks in and out). I have a shop manual for the NAA, but it does not have a trouble shooting section. Any suggestions about the best way to adjust the new carb so as to eliminate this loping problem?

I have never been able to successfully install the upper rope seal with that wire rope thingy! I gave it up about 40 years ago.

Here is a file I have on the way I used to do it when I was a one man show at a small Ford tractor dealership in Talladega Alabama. It works!

Unless you want to remove the crankshaft don’t even think about trying to remove the upper main bearing seal on the N engine.

There is a better way to fix it if it really needs fixing. First the rear main bearing itself must be in good condition or trying to fix the rear seal is just a practice in futility.

If the rear main bearing is OK you should first remove the hood tank and the front axle and radiator etc. This will give you ample room to drop the pan. This will save much wailing and knashing of teeth! Obtain an original rear main bearing seal kit for the Ferguson TO 20 engine. This consists of a bottom seal similar to the one used on the N engine and a big ball of cotton roping. Cotton Roping is what a big cotton thread looks like before it is twisted in the cotton mill.

Using a soft welding rod of about 5/32” start packing the cotton roping into the upper seal. Don’t try to remove any of the original upper seal but pack all of the roping you can get into the upper seal slot. The old seal will be compacted and fill any void that is in the upper seal.

Replace the lower half of the seal with an original N seal. Don’t worry about the different colors on the ends of the seal if it matters I haven’t been able to find out what it is in the last 40 years.
