640 water temp pickup removal

As I try to restore a run down Ford 640 I finally found the water temp pickup. A little obscured at the rear right side of the block, hidden by the rusted battery box. The original line has been broken with only the pickup or plug left in the block. Can anyone lend some information on the best way to get the plug out? It seems pretty well in there and I am trying my hardest to not break anything off and make the hole unusable.

Thanks everyone for the help on an earlier post. It was a big help. The 640 should be running well after I overhaul it.

The two previous gentlemen have good advice. I would add if you have time is spray the fitting with PB Blaster or any good penetrating solvent. The main thing is don't get in too much of a hurry. I have had items that would not budge, especially if you know they have been there for years, and just sprayed them and just let them set, some times I have sprayed them daily for a week and just waited. Usually with patience the will come without damaging anything around them.

I'm with Old.. it should be a brass fitting..less chances to damage the castiron that way..

Most of those are made of brass so there soft. I my self would try a 6 point socket on it, like an impact type. If it doesn't move all that will happen is the nut part will strip and then if that happens you might have to cut it off. If you still have it so you can start the engine if you start it up and let it get warm that will also help
