I wanted to bale some hay next year and thought to buy a baler that could run off the pto of my Ford 850. I wondered if this is a reasonable idea. New Holland balers are common in my area, I think I could get one for a good price, but I want to know if it will work.

A New Holland 273 has got to be the best square baler built in my opinion. We used to have a Hayliner 68 that has baled close to one million bales without any major problems before we upgraded to a 273. You can"t beat a Ford tractor and New Holland hay equipment.

I bale hay with an 850 and a Ford 542 baler. The advantage to Ford 542 or 532 baler is you can usually get on very cheap (mine was free). But the disadvantage is parts are hard to find and usually expensive.

A used NH will be more expensive to buy, but easier to keep running.

Live pto would be nice, but you can learn to live without it if an 850 is what you have.

It can be done.... The biggest limiting factor with that tractor will be the lack of live PTO. It should have plenty of power to run the small to mid capacity 14x18 balers. I think it would probably run into a lack of power for the higher capacity models and you wouldn't be able to 'fill' the baler which is generally needed to get a good bale out of them.
Make sure the baler has an ORC built into it's shaft and get yourself familiar with hauling the transmission out of gear in time with the power impulses of the plunger because there will be times you need to stop...

A better solution would be finding a baler with it's own engine, but you certainly can bale with the 850 and a PTO baler too.

My Grandpa baled for years with a Super 68 and then a 276 NH baler, with wagons that held about 100-115 bales - behind a Super H Farmall. That SH was rated 33h.p., your 850 is rated 45. Both have non-live pto. Live pto would be nice, but your 850 will handle it.

I've handled many bales baled with a MF square, pto baler catching them on a wagon pulled behind. We would put on an average of 115 bales. The ground was both level and hilly/rolling. There was NEVER any problem with the tractor handling the task quite well. That tractor was a Ford 860 with 14.9x28 loaded rear tires and a set of pie weights on the rears. It never lacked for power, traction, nor stability to do this job. My advice, weight your tractor similiar to the one I described, get a nice NH or MF pto baler hook up your wagon and bale hay. We used to run a 532 ford baler with a kicker, behind a 64 ford 4000 with S-O-S transmission. No real big windrows, mostly on the flats, and it actually was a suitable combination for the 25 or so acres of grass hay, 7 acres of that was alfalfa. My father was surprised that it had enough hp etc., but the transmission/independent PTO was really the reason it worked. While we had our ford dealership I can remember baling with a low hour 5000, as we would use some of the used stock off the lot, seemed to handle the bigger windrows of the 11 acres of grass hay behind the shop, really dense hay used to come off those fields, ground water was only 5 feet below, great for well points, but the 4000 still handled that field as well. I cannot imagine doing the same work with my 850, although I think it would handle it, without at least the double clutch of an 860 so you can start and stop if need be, that is the deciding factor, and or the size of the windrows, if kept uniform and not too large you might get away with it, hard to say having never done it with that tractor.

No hills, no kicker. Any ideas on good baler models to try, new holland or others?

I usto bale with my 841 I used a JD 14T with kicker and pulled a trailer behind it but I was on almost flat ground and it was all it wanted. So kicker is ok but no wagon. It will handle any of the small square balers ok. NH and JD are the 2 best brands of balers. Make sure you buy a good working baler or the knotters will have you ready to shot your self

Ain't that the truth, I can remember baling with my father and that 532 just about pushed him to the limit at times, we joke about it now, but he was going to literally shoot that 532. Best thing we ever did was take the kicker off it, never could keep it adjusted, would break the nice bales it produced, belts etc., then those knotters, luckily he had a good friend that could work on those. The ag equipment/implement line from Ford was not the most popular back then, but the line of tractors and hoes was just the opposite. Eventually that 532 earned its keep, that 64 S-0-S was a great tractor, saw that one in the ads here, mighty tempting.

I love my New Holland model 268. Also had a Ford 532 that worked great too.

Sure it will work- lots of folks do it. The only problem is that with non-live PTO the baler won't start operating until the tractor starts moving.

That tractor should run a reasonably sized square baler. My only caution would be if you are looking at a kicker baler and what you might need for hydraulics compared with what your tractor has. Likewise, if you are in a hilly area and are planning to use a kicker baler with a big wagon behind you might be taxing the 850 some. For a simple "drop the bale on the ground" baler, it should work fine.
