I am planning to replace the Proof Meter on my '57 Ford 640, because it has the 5 speed version instead of the correct 4 speed model. Does the tach read correctly with the 5 speed version installed? Other than purchasing a 4 speed unit, do I need other parts to complete this project? Thanks in advance for all the help!

When I replaced the original proofmeter a few years ago, I found the new meter was slightly larger than the hole in the dash. I had to dress up the hole with a half round file to get it to slide it.

The replacement meter lasted 5 years and 530 hours. Now the rpm needle works sporadically but the hour counter still seems to work. I have another replacement meter ready to install. Hopefully it will last another 5 years. I have not delusions that a new meter will last as long as the original did.

Mine quit after a couple hours. The hour counter worked, but the tach needle wouldn't budge. I wrote the guy I got it from and he sent me a new one which has worked fine for the past year or so.

Mine came from India (as so many new tractor parts are) and it's up to 14 hours so far.

Some of the ebay replacement proofmeters are made in China and reports from users indicate they quit working within 10 hours of use.

RPM's are displayed correctly. Just the speed in gear is wrong.

No big deal to replace. The new ones have a light hook up in the back. Single wire from the light switch is needed to make that function and a clean ground path.

Only hard part is the tight quarters.

Why not just order the one that says it's for a 5 speed?

Sounds like it is a 4spd tractor he has.. and already has a proof out of a 650.. why would he want another one?

Remove old tach, put new one in.. no other parts needed.

can't comment on the gearing of the tach needle itself.. but keep in mind that the engines were rated for the same rpm reguardless of 5spd or 4spd.. and with the tach being full scale.. I'm guessing the tach function is correct.. IE.. you could probably pry open the bezel and put in a correct faceplate decal... ( but I don't know that for a fact.. )
