Will a Ford 2000 or 4000 Direct-Drive Select-O-Speed Clutch transmission work in a model 871 or 881 tractor?

I've got what appears to be an overrunning clutch that is not engaging based on the shop manual for the 801 series and I was wondering if I could substitute a later model SOS tranny for the disabled one in my 881?

Thanks for the help in advance.

he means there is no engine braking in those gears. In other words, the tractor can coast away from you and pick up speed going down hill.

And yes the others are right. Ford even swapped the blue transmission inot the older red transmission tractors as kind of a recall in the mid sixties for those who were having problems. It was a $600 exchange then as I recall.

Allen:

Yes. S-O-S transmissions through model year 1964 will bolt right in.

Check the input shaft spline first and find a replacement with the same number of splines as yours or you will need to change the torque limiting clutch to match the transmission.

If you do make the swap and decide to sell the transmission that you remove I may be interested if you are not too far away.

Dean,

Thanks for the info. I plan on keeping my old tranny, as I already have a spare overruning clutch. I just thought as long as I was going to have to do transmission work, I might see about getting the direct-drive clutch model in there.

The complete transmission from a 4 cyl. 2000 or 4000 will fit the 801 tractor with no problem. The gear selector for the 801 shows free-wheeling gears with red hash marks but the 2000 or 4000 will not free-wheel in those gears, it will hold back.

Jim,

When you say free-wheeling, what do you mean by that?

Thanks,

Allen

Free-wheeling means that if the tractor is pointed downhill, gravity will take over and it will be just like being in neutral...you won't get any engine braking effect because the transmission is free-wheeling. That's the best way I can think of to describe it.

The header was typed wrong. The 801 does not have a direct-drive SOS clutch like the 2000 and 4000 series.

I don't know how difficult it is, or what all is needed for parts, but I've seen the exact swap you're considering done between a 4-cyl. 4000 and a 901.
