Started to replace the brakes on my '54 NAA last night. Are there any tips or tricks for removal of the brake drums? It looks like there are two bolts per drum that hold the drum to the hub. Left side: one is completely missing and one had had the head broken off. Right side the hub has been installed so as to cover the holes, therefor no bolts installed.

We have tried a block and hammer, tapping all over the drum and trying to drive it off from the rear. Then we tried a gear puller. We have not moved the drum at all.

Well...probably hasn't been off this century. Back of adjusting screw as much as possible. You can put penetrating oil at the hub for days and days and keep tapping at it. A puller and some heat at the hub would be my way. I would also smack the drum with a dead blow hammer at the edge of drum. The best way to start is with the easy methods, then keep getting more and more serious. Heat at the hub area is where it most likely is stuck. Propane torch won't do it. Need oxy/acetylene torch. Mapp gas may get you there.

and dont forget to adjust the shoes back in, as they can be so for out and theres a huge groove in the old drum so the shoes need to back off quite a bit...

i always end up going the wrong way on the adjuster star wheel so look in there with a flashlight and move it the right way...

Thanks for the help Ken. I"ll give that a try. OP, come on down Saturday and show us how to repair the brakes, and we can show you how to replace a clutch without completely disassembling the tractor. You don"t have to remove the radiator to install a new pressure plate. Trust me on this.

If the drum is stuck or rusted to the hub, take a torch and heat the drum between the bolts. Don't heat it till it turns red, just get it really warm. It will expand enough to come off. Don't worry about the bolts that hold the drum on. I've done many brake jobs on these. Most don't have the bolts anymore. When you tighten the wheel to the hub, that will hold the drum in place. When you put it back together, put a little antiseize around the hub so next time it will come apart easier.
