Can anyone tell me the first production year for a 900 Ford? How does the 960 compare to the 900 especially the RPM's the engine should turn for antique pulling. Thank you.

It's Suzie's tractor that's beating his WC up.

The 600, 700, 800,900 series all came out as model year 1955 and they may have been built in 1954. These numbers represented the series. Specific models in those days had specific numbers such as the 640-650-660 and the 950-960. There never was a model 900 to my knowledge and I was there. I disked corn stalks with a brand new 860 in the spring of 1955. These models were superceded by the '01 series in 1957 and then there was a much wider array of models within the series. Mike-Iow

The 900 series tractor was first built in 1954, but the first year for the 960 (5 speed, 2-stage clutch) was 1955. Rated no-load high RPM for the 960 is 2450 RPMs. This information can be confirmed in the IT FO-20 service manual.

It's my opinion that anyone who would hook orange paint against a good Ford is just looking to be embarrassed ; > )

The 960 is a 900. The last two digits represent the transmission among other things. The 960 has a five speed transmission and a two-stage (live-pto) clutch. Not sure what to tell you about RPM's for pulling, though this was a pretty high-revving motor for its day.

I shouldn't even reply since I'm not sure of the exact answer to your question. But here's what I do understand and what I've surmised from what i've read. The "Hundred" series started production in late '54 as '55 models. The serial number lists lump all 600, 700, 800, and 900 machines together. However, my impression is that the first year only the 600 and 800 series were manufactured, and the 700/900 row crop machines made their appearance in either '56 or '57. I had one "expert" (someone i have no reason to doubt) tell me that the 700 was only made for one year (1957) before being replace by the 701 series. I don't know if the same is true of the 900 or not. Anyone else with better info?

I have a 960 built in '55-same year I was built. I'm due for a restoration soon, also.

Like the old TV commercial used to say, "ask the man who owns one!"

PS My 850 and I are also '55 models. Neither of us smoke (yet).

Thanks to all that responded to my question about the 960 Ford. apparently someone recognized my name and realize I pull an allis-chalmers. You are correct in that the 960 is embarassing all of us not just the orange but green and red also. It gives us all something to shoot for.
