I am going to look at a Ford 501 sickle mower in the next week or two with the intent of buying it. Does anyone have photos of one mounted on a tractor? Or a copy of the Owner's Manual with a photo? I want to make sure all of the attaching parts (and all other parts) are included with the one I'm looking at.

Over in the garden tractor forum, on Dec 16, I replied to a question about sickle mowers; different type than the 501, but a sickle mower none-the-less. I have had very poor luck with them and I explained the problems I faced.

You might truck over there and read before you spend your money.....and my last one was a 501 I used on 2000 and 3000 series Ford tractors.

I would pass on the 501 mower and look for a IH 1100 or a 1300 balanced head mower. New idea also made the same mower. Also one of the Ford mowers was the same as the 1100 and the 1300.

515 is very different from a 501

awhtx,

I have a Ford 501 sickle bar mower that I use on my Ford 2000 tractor. I also have the original manual for it. The manual is pretty rough from age and weathering, but it is still readable. If you'd like, I could try to scan three or four pages from the manual that tells about how to attach it to a tractor, and then send those files to you. Or, what would probably be easier to read, if you would send me your address in an e-mail, I would copy the manual and send you the whole thing in the mail.

In any event, the 501 series has some different attaching kits depending on what kind of tractor you're going to be using it on. My manual lists five different attaching kits that are available. Also, the manual says repeatedly that the 501 won't work on a Ford 2000 LGC tractor, but that's exactly what I have and I use mine extensively every season.

Anyway, let me know if you'd like for me to try the scanning route or the mail route.

Good luck,

Tom in TN
