I"ve noticed that Ford had two different diesel air cleaners for the 801 diesels. One has a boxy shape that is mounted directly under the intake manifold. The other has a cylindrical shape and is mounted above the hood.

When did Ford change the air cleaner for the diesels, anyone know?

Thanks,

Allen - my 881 has the cylindrical type of air cleaner

I think they also upgraded the air cleaners during a recall ford did on there diesel motors to replace
unbalanced crankshafts. You can tell if a motors been upgraded by looking for a bumpout on the oilpan. It's been a long time but I think that's
what they did to my father's 801.

Was the external air cleaner available on the Gas versions. For some reason my uncles 861 gas had one, but he worked for a Ford dealer so it might be something he added on his own.

Hello Allen , The BOX TYPE air cleaner is the first design for the Diesel tractors from 1958 - 1962 Red and Gray AG or Red and Buff INDUSTRIAL. Which the early 58's had a single strap design and then like your other picture a double strap design thru 1962. The later design like on the 901 in the picture is for the Blue and Gray AG or Blue and Buff INDUSTRIAL and was an over the parts counter upgrade or replacement kit. Thanks Tony JACOBS

Tony,

Thanks for the information. It is amazing the breadth and depth of knowledge folks on this board have concerning these old Ford tractors.

Merry Christmas,

Allen

At some point during production Ford came out with a oil bath air cleaner for the diesels. I believe that it may have been introduced with the changeover from 601 to 2000 and 801 to 4000, therefore it would technically not have been an 801 filter. My 1958 861D has been retrofitted with the oil bath filter.

The original box-type air cleaner on the 601 and 810 diesels is an oil bath filter.

I didn't know that. My oil bath filter is the cylindrical one bolted to the hood with the oil cup on the bottom.
