I have put another battery in my 850...after installing I took off the pos cable, put a light between the cable and post of pos, and no glow. (Ford Meisters told me to do this) BUT my battery still drains down if I dont take the neg cable off. What gives on this one?

Soundguy,

AF1 never stated it drained w/o the + cable connected. His comment with reference to the + cable was when he checked it w/ a test light and found nothing. In response to Old, it would seem he likely had a test light that required more amps than desired and therefore was giong to get a decent multimeter to find his problem.

Hmm.. something is suspect here.

You are tiking the + post off and it drains.. but won't drain with the neg post off.

Something sounds fishy.

With EITHER post off.. the bat is 100% out of the circuit...

somehting is being omitted.

Mr. Sound~~~ I usually just take off the negative post off since its on the outside. This prevents the battery from draining down. When I get my multimeter tomorrow I will search for the varment which is bringing me down. Im on my third battery so I know this is not the problem. Cables are clean and battery area is clean...Maybe all this Florida Humidity? :0) Thanks! AF1

Still something is being left out in your explanation.

If you disconnect -just- the + cable on the battery, the battery is 100% out of circuit.

same with -just- disconnecting the - cable..

If you are saying that you disconnected the + cable, and then it still discharged.. either the battery is bad or dirty.. or you didn't really completely disconnect the + side of the cable.

If I just take off the positive cable and leave neg connected, this would prevent battery from going down? Right..Until I get this figured out..thanks sound

Mr. Sound..here is another question..I just tweaked my points on my 850. I cant remember if ever this tractor has ever been timed. It starts better than my F-150! Idles great and runs great..would you pursue timing this 57 year old tractor?

taking either cable off takes the battery out of the circuit loop. Unless the battery is bad or dirty.. no electron flow.

What I do when I have problems like that is fire the test light away, out of sight. Get a good digital multimeter. Set it to Ohms, disconnect the pos cable and connect the meter to the cable; the other lead to ground. See what the load (ohms/resistance) is and then follow the load up the cable. This is by far the easiest way to find a drain once you're familiar with basic meter functions...
If you don't find a load on the electrical system then look at the battery. It's possible that a pile of crap on top of the battery will conduct from post to post and drain the battery. Clean with baking soda if you find that. Barring that, the battery is likely shorted internally assuming that the tractor is charging normally...

How big was that light?? You have to use a light that will light up with very little amps going in to it. Waht waorks real good is a meter and with every thing turned off you should get zero volts across a meter but if you get any volts you have a problem then you can go from there

It would help to know if you are running a gernerator or an alternator. If the points in your regulator are stuck (welded closed) you might be discharging after the motor is off. There are quite a few reasons this could be happening. A simple fix if you can't find the reason might be a battery disconnect switch from the auto supply houses. This would be a bandaid tho.
Good luck!

Not sure bout the alternator/gen but the points never have stuck open...starts fine, but when shut it off and not on seat for a week or two, its dead

The stuck points he"s referring to are the ones in the voltage regulator not the ignition points. How about describing your electrical system? Is it 6 V or 12 V ? Generator or alternator?

AF1; You most likely have an alternator since the tractor was converted to 12 volts. You can have a 6 volt generator rewound for 12 volts, but I don't think that is the norm. I believe Cvan was speeking of the 6 volt system which has an external voltage regulator which is generally mounted on the rear center hood section. It looks like a metal box with wires hooked to it. It has points inside the box that will sometimes stick. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words, so if it would help you, let me know, the difference is very distinctive.

The alternator has an internal regulator that cannot be seen from the outside.

Glen,

Actually, the 12v systems used the same external regulator. If a Ford alternator (now who would do THAT?) was used, it wouldn't have an internal regulator.

I also agree you need to use a meter and check the AMPS between the negative post and the cable.

aahhh! Thanks John, I didn't think of that. You are exactly right(as ususal). My 850 had a Ford alternator and regulator before I switched alternators. I completely forgot about it. Thanks for keeping me straight.

I know nothing about 850s ,but the selinoid for my starter went bad and drained the battery ,easy to check in my case ,just unbolted it and brushed back mounting plate against ground (block or chassis)and saw sparks.happy holidays
