I've got a 1975 3000 diesel. After changing the hydraulic fluid last winter from the old 90 weight-like fluid to ford N/H 134 fluid,I have created some leaks. The worst one being the threaded fitting on the pump. Before I tear into this, what surprises can I expect? What kind of seal is on this tube?An o-ring?Also,how does the other line come out of the pump? Thanks in advance.

I have a 1967 3500 industrial diesel with a cessna gear pump. the pressure (out) line is a 37 degree compression fit (no seal or teflon needed) the nipple connects to the pump with an O-ring boss seal. be sure you use buna-n (nitrile) rubber o-rings. The suction side nipple is also an o-ring boss type, and the suction tube connects with a hose clamp. no teflon or sealant needed other than the o-ring.

The connections are pretty simple, mine are a pain to get to since they're mounted inside the cast iron frame. there's very little room to work a wrench. I have to get creative with a pipe wrench to break them loose.

Hydraulic fittings are usually put back together using a sealant, and that might fix the problem described. Liquid sealant specific for hydraulic systems are sold most tractor places. Teflon tape also can be used. In either case, it's important to apply sealant only to the upper male end threads that will not be exposed inside the line. In particular, over-wrapped Teflon tape can break off inside lines and create obstructions.

Tom's comment ONLY applies to tapered thread connections such as pipe thread. Do not use sealant on ORB, JIC, face seal, or other flange or o-ring seal fittings. The seal in question is called a pressure nut, has a large seal similar to a short piece of fuel hose and will be found at a New Holland dealer. It comes with the seal, nut and washer. The suction tube is sealed in the pump by a common o-ring.
