Changed the points in my 63 2000 back on July 5th, then ran it for about 10 hours mowing. Since then I have cranked it maybe once a week to move trailers around but probably haven"t put another 5 hours on it. After the recent rain we had I fired it up and she ran for about 20 seconds then started missing then shut down - no spark. Filed the points, she ran for a minute or so then sputtered and shut down - no spark again. Screwdriver would arc from points to ground but no spark across points when I opened them manually. These are Ford points from a tune-up kit bought from a CNH dealer. Since the last points lasted 5 or 6 years I would have thought that these would last longer than 15 hours. Are new points (probably made in China) that crappy? Anybody else having this issue? I reckon it is time to spend the money and get the Pertronix I have wanted for it.

Check for bushing/shaft wear on the distributor. It should have less than 0.002" side play on the shaft. I had a similar problem on my TO-30 several years ago and my distributor was worn bad enough that with the points closed when I pushed side ways on the shaft, the points would open 0.030"! It ran like a three legged dog, when it ran, and the spark was a weak spindly orange spark. I can"t believe it ran at all with about a half a degree of dwell!!!.

Condenser has got me before in reply to Fighting suburbia in NC, 01-02-2008 07:04:28
Good point (pun intended). I had a condenser leave me on the side of the road an hour and a half away from home some years ago. Kind of the same symptoms, now that I think about it. Consider the condenser changed as soon as I get home and scrounge one off of something else. Always something to scratch the noggin over..... ....

The new points really looked bad for the few hours they have been run so chances are the condenser may have been bad from the start.

BTW - my 53 IH R-112 has points that date to 1989 or earlier in it. Had to clean them up when I first got the truck running about 5 years ago but haven't had to touch them since. KISS and "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" still works for the old iron.

I agree with Rod condenser is probably going bad. What the condenser does is keeps the points from getting burned but if it goes bad the points get burned and don't last very long

I would start with a new condensor first. That's all of about 3 bucks? Go from there...

No, points made off shore aren't bad usually. If it is a 6v. system, my first suspicion would be that you have a bad ballast resister. You may have a bad ignition switch, but you did not say that the battery was also running down, so forget that.

12V Neg ground conversion in reply to Tim K, 01-02-2008 07:16:37
I am wondering if the moisture had something to do with it - it has been bone dry so far and now we get rain and it acts up. No power or switch issues that I am aware of. Optima battery stays charged as long as I turn the switch off. Thought the coil might be going but when I get good spark with the screwdriver from points to ground so now I think not. Voltages good to coil. New points on the way from NAPA so I will change them and see if that fixes it or not. Pertronix has moved to the top of the list now, I reckon.
