I guess you learn something new every day. I sure did yesterday when I started my '64 4000 diesel SOS to put it away. It had set here in the yard hitched to the generator since the ice storms. I put 50 hours on it just sitting here pulling the generator.

When I went to shift it into forward gears, the shifter wouldn't go beyond the N position. You'll never guess what I found. On second thought . . . maybe I'll let you guess a while before I tell youthird party image

odds are slim to none I'd say. Guess next time, I'll have to get the ice off the seat so I can sit down third party imageIt musta been that standin up that did it.

The tractor acted normally in Park, both Rs and N.
Now for the answer. Wayne came the closest, almost hitting the nail on the head. Dean was really warm. The illumination light socket vibrated down enough to hook the shifter face plate in the slot where the light shines through as tiny as that slot is. I had to get a screwdriver in there and pry the light socket up and away.

What are the odds of that, Larry?

You must have not been holding your mouth right when you tried to shift into forward gears.

b]By the way Larry what is a Select-Q-Speed?[/b]

On the early SOS decals, the O had a shifter handle on it. Although it sticks up and back, as close as I could get to it is a capital Q.

Dean said: (quoted from post at 12:10:39 01/03/08) My guess is that something vibrated loose during the 50 hours of stationary duty in either the valve assembly or, less likely, the selector, jamming the mechanism. One of the selector stop screws, perhaps?

Dean

You are very warm!!!! But it wasn't a screw!!!

Was it the shift inhibitors that are used to make it act like a shuttle?

Well at least you're all batting a thousand so far.

It's not ice.

It's not a broken cable.

And nothing is dead . . . at least not in that tractorthird party image
