Hello all,

My 901 will start and run great for 60-90 minutes. It then starts missing and loosing power, but I can still get a little done and get back to the barn.

I have checked fuel flow by pulling the drain from the bottom of the carb and it looks good. Nice steady flow, let a gallon or more drain last weekend. If I choke it when running poorly, it just dies. I splashed some gas in the air intake pipe just above the carb and didn't notice any change.

I pulled the plug wires at the plugs today and heard what I believe is a good spark, though I didn't see it. I didn't notice a difference though even when I pulled a wire off, sounded the same. I put a new coil, plugs and plug wires on this summer/fall. I also cleaned up the copper wire carring power to the points and fixed a failed insulator. I gapped the points and timed with a light. Ran great this fall brush hogging. I checked the dwell when doing the tune-up and it wasn't nearly the 50 degrees it was looking for, but everything ran great and I figured my old meter may not be trust worthy.

I put new oil in the air filter this summer but failed to tighten up the pipe connections to the air filter. I know I sucked some dust into the carb when brush hogging this summer, but it continued to run well.

I assume the consensus (sp?) will be to take the carb off and clean up, all the little passages, etc. All advice appreciated.

Chris

Thanks everyone,

I kept the old coil when I replaced it last fall. I don't know that it generates as strong a spark as the new one, but will switch coils when it starts acting up on Friday and see if that solves the problem. I know many don't care for the SOS trannies, but when operating properly, they sure are slick. Shifting on the fly with a flip of the wrist is awful nice.

Yep, Chris, I agree w/Old on this one! A failed coil usually runs cold but manifests problems as it warms up. That's kinda why I lean towards the coil, along with your absence of visible spark.

could be lots of things...

could be rich and as it warms up it starts to flood out but you'ld see the black smoke..

could be carb plug that only lets a small trickle into the bowl and your finally out running the trickle of fuel and its running out of fuel momentarily...

could be low fuel pressure and the fuel line gets hot and starts vapor locking.. could be ignition switch...

Larry is right on.. you should be able to 'SEE' spark.. and if you pull a plug wire.. there should be a noticeable miss. If not.. you were already not fireing on that cyl.. thus your power loss.. etc.

Not sure where the problem is... could be coil I guess.. though those round coils are pretty bulletproof. You don't have a 6v coil on a 12v system without a resistor do ya?

I'd try a different coil since an hour is about right for a coil to heat up and start having a poor spark.

Assumptions is dangerous things, Chris. I'm going to take a stab at a failed coil or condenser. You should see a nice fat blue spark at the plugs and a noticeable difference should be observed when pulling a plug wire.
