Good evening all,

I am hoping to get an old Freeman loader back on my 971 this spring/summer. I like the idea of DA cylinders for down pressure, but imagine they are somewhat expensive. The old SA cylinders may just need new hoses, but I was wanting to see how much additional $$ I am talking to get 2 new DA cylinders vs. replumbing the old ones. The old cylinders are 36" long (housing), with 2-1/2" outside dia. and 1-3/4" dia. rams. Opinions?? Who do you like for affordable, reasonably built cylinders? TIA

Apparently the original Ford spool can be set for SA or DA cylinders.

Thanks for the input fellas. I'm going to have a local shop look at the old cylinders and price new. Will look into cleaning the old ones up if they think they are ok.

Your probably looking at $200-300 each for new 2 way cylinders maybe a little bit more. But if your loader is a good heavy one they are well worth it as far as what can be done. Plus it will also mean never having to jack up the front end to change a tire.

I would go for the DA cylinders. You need a few more measurements.

The 1 3/4 is the current bore. That dictates lifting power. Larger is more. You can look for 1 3/4 cylinders or 2". I wouldn't go over 2" as the forces may get too high for the loader frame.

You need to measure the mounting pin diameter. It's probably 1". Then measure the width of the mounting ends on the cylinder. You need to match that with the new cylinder.

Next you need the center of pin hole to center of pin hole with the cylinder fully retracted and fully extended. Try and keep the replacements 1/2" of the old ones.

Surplus Center (the link) has many cylinders. If you don't find the one you need online, call them and they may have it. The name is a little misleading as they have mostly new cylinders...
