Opened a can of worms

I've had this early 2000 for less than a week and I can't keep my hands off it. My poor Farmall’s and AC’s are going to fall by the waist-side. While scraping a thick layer of grease off the PTO shaft I realized (in the dark) that it wasn't a shaft at all. Come to find out its a cast steel cover that looks like a PTO shaft, until you get the grease off of course. I tried to take it off tonight but as I pulled the housing the entire shaft came with it and dumped, what seemed like, a gallon of gear oil on my brand new shoes. What a mess and the wife was disgusted - gotta love the smell of gear oil. Anyway, does the shaft cover separate from the flange (four bolt pattern)?

There's a better manual for your tractor than the IT manual. It's the original Ford manual labeled for 55 to 60 Ford tractors. It also covers the 61-64 models unless they have the blue SOS tranny. IF your 2000 is a 63 or 64 model SOS you'll need it's supplement as well.
The Ford Manual is SE-8175 and there are usually several offerings of it on eBay pretty reasonable. The supplement, if you need it, is SE-8175-S1. It appears on eBay from time to time as well, but is not as consistently there as is the SE-8175.

Yes - Central Calif, Manteca. My power sprayer pooped out on me so I tried using the garden hose - trashed a new t-shirt and only removed about 10% of the grease. The new shoes are toast, but they're work shoes so who cares. Okay, so must get the I&T #FO-20 - exploded views pull me out of the fire every time. I'll add nose plugs to the list for the wifey and remember to "wax-on - wax-off” with that shaft cover (I'll be darned - its threaded - had no idea). You guys are great. Pics to follow soon.

Andy,
There is a mixture of gear oil and new leather that that is not at all noxious to men.
The womenfolk don't have the nose for it of course. One sniff and they leave fearing a worse tragedy.

Screw on, screw off. Righty Tightly, Lefty Loosey.

You can get a whole new PTO shaft assembly with bearing for about $100. Can also get the bearing separately. It shouldn't come out.

By the way, why the heck were you wearing new shoes when working on a new tractor? Don't you know they aren't all house broken? An old kitty pan with litter (oil dry) is a cheap investment. Got a pressure washer?

Manteca? The one in Central Calif? Yes. The cap should unscrew from the PTO/seal housing. I wonder why everything pulled out. Did you remove the 4 bolts before tugging? First thing, buy yourself a Manual. I&T #FO-20. The exploded views will prove valuable to keep your heart attacks at bay.

Yes.. rather than unscrew the cap, it does sound like he pulle dthe 4 bolts from the bearing carrier and yanked the entire assembly loose.

Hope his seals hold up good...

The gear oil is not going to hurt the shoes, it will help water proof them and make them soft.

Yeah, and when you walk in a dark room everyone will know it's you. It's that certain "air" about you!
