I am considering purchasing a used Ford 801 tractor with attachemnts. I have read some negative comments concerning the Select-O-Speed transmission system. Does anyone out there have any information I can used to make a good decision ?
The Ford 801 is a 4WD version of the 800, Any information concerning the tractor and what to look for would be graciously accepted.
Thanks Mark

IF it has been updated to the "blue" transmission it's likely to be more reliable than the original "red" tranny that had the overunning clutch. Reds would freewheel in 5, 6 and 9 because of this feature. Blues replaced the overunning clutch with a direct drvie clutch and had no freewheeling gears. the outer appearance is slightly different on the inching pedal and top cover. They may be painted red to match the tractor. My grandpa had one he updated and had them paint it to match the tractor.

Mark, You have every reason to be skeptical of a SOS. If you're not familiar with the system, be careful. You might also want to read in the archives concerning SOS. We have 1 now that is worth about $1500 if it was not SOS it would be worth about $3500. Good luck, Ron

Hi Mark, What Info. do you want ? , I have both Gas and Diesel S.O.S. Tractors all Four Wheel Drive and would not trade them for any other tractor on the market . Where are you located ? I live in Mass. , I had sold one of my 4x4 tractors that was a 1960 871 S.O.S 4X4 without a loader to a man in Conn. Thanks Tony Jacobs

I bought a '64 w/ SOS this spring (first tractor). It works fine. I would run it through all the gears. It should snap right into each gear. You can check for slipping by braking and seeing if the engine starts to load down.
