Is there a way to tell visually from a distance whether an engine is a 134 CI or 172 CI engine? If not, what is the easiest way up close. Have an engine I am trying to identify from a distance, and know it is one or the other. Thanks.

I may well be confused, but I think that the "EAE" prefix is 134" gas, "EAF" prefix is 172" gas, "B9NN" prefix is 144" diesel, "CONN" is the later 172".

The casting numbers on the block are the most sure way to tell what engine it is. The casting number will be on the right skirt of the block below and to the rear of the distributor. It will be something like EAA6015A, EAF6015A, B9NN6015 B, CONN6015J ect. If you can read that number, post it and someone should be able to tell you which it is.

Check the fuel bowl glass, 134 had a short wide glass {like commonly found on older lawn mowers} 172 have a longer narrow glass. At least that is what it shows in my Ford service manuals'

If you can get your spyglass out, there's an aluminum tag on the right side of the engine that says one or the other. At least mine does. Irv*

KCM:

The only failsafe way is the numbers.

The later model 172 CI engines had a noticeably larger carburetor, air filter and tube, and exhaust but these parts on early 172s are not visually different from those used on the 134s from a distance.

True. And also sometimes the bigger diameter exhaust gets put on a 134 engine. The Jubilee I took apart last fall had an aftermarket manifold with the big diameter exhaust system. Still had a TSX428 carb, though.
