I just rebuilt the steering box in our Ford 3000 tractor. I followed the I&T manual, I now i have ford manual on the way..... But anyways, this is my first shot at ever rebuilding a steering box. The problem is that there is about a 1/4 of a turn of play in the steering. I know i dont have something shimmed or adjusted properly. What am i doing wrong, and what do i need to check? Also right now i have the steering arms just fitted on, they are not on tightly yet. Do i just eyeball it to getting the tires lined up straight before attaching the steering arms, or is there a good method to aligning the wheels?

Thanks

What do you feel for when installing the shims between the steering column and the housing? Right now i know my play is coming from the ball and nut assembly wiggling to one side or another before actually turning the first gear. Sorry i dont know more technical terms. I'm still new to this stuff. This is the first steering box i have ever rebuilt.

I did replace the bearings, but not the cups. They were in good condition and i could not get them out. I did not want to risk damaging the housing. I believe i got the right about of shims to adjust the bearing preload. I wasnt too sure what i was feeling for. I did shim the and adjust the sector gear backlash properly, that was easy, along with retiming everything. What i did notice while assembling is that the ball and nut assmembly did have some play between it and the first sector gear. It would rotate back and forth a little. I could not figure out a way to fix this. It was like the ball and nut assembly needed to be closer to the sector gear. I am not sure if these are supposed to have some play or not.
Thanks for your help. I would like to get this fixed properly. We put a bit of money into it and i dont want it to self destruct.

I will have to go back and look to see how many shims i put between the steering column and the housing. I believe it was one paper shim, and then two of the thick steel shims. I forget the exact size, but i will post it when i go out to look.

The pitman arms have timing marks and/or blind splines to time them to the sector shafts.

Did you get the correct amount of shims to adjust the bearing preload for the upper and lower thrust bearings? did you renew the bearings and cups?

Have you use dthe sector studs to adjsut the sector gear backlash?

post back.
