Have been looking at a Ford 3400. It's three cylinder gas with a five speed tran. and power steering. it's pretty straight and everything seems to work. The asking price is $4000. Is this in the ballpark? It's painted yellow with blue showing through. Is this an industrial unit? I'm looking to upgrade from an 8N.

Yep a 3400 is an industrial unit and a dam good tractor. I've owned a 1968 model for about eight years now and it has served me well. Mine is also a five speed with high/low range. You may also be looking at a differential lock as I have on mine quite handy when plowing snow. Paid $5K for mine back then with a complete rebuild on the engine done under my supervision included. If it helps I wouldn't hesitate to do it again. At $4k you'll have room to work on it as needed over time if it's field ready now. The tractor indeed should have been yellow from day one but some people like them better blue and try to hide the fact they are industrial this way. Must be what your looking at has since been painted yellow again? If your serious about taking the plunge I'de jack the front up and completly check out the frontend for wear signs. Industrial units usually had a hard life in the begining with the first owner and get passed off when they are worn out. May give you some bartering leverage on the price if it's in need of bearings, bushings, drag links etc. How many hours of the engine? Might have to figure on the rebuild down the road. In any event four grand is in the ballpark if it don't need rear rubber. Good Luck & Happy Holidays to ya... AB

BB: Ab has some good suggestions.
3400 is an industrial version of the Ag 3000. 3500 is a heavier duty industrial with boiler plate grill and nose; 3400 has a stamped sheet metal grill and nose.
Industrial tractors built from 1965 to 1974 had a blue power train and yellow sheet metal and fenders.
