PTO will not quit turning when the PTO is disengaged. Is there an adjustment that can remedy the situation? Thanks

It depends upon your year model..... in reply to jdslim, 01-30-2008 18:50:13
If I'm not mistaken the 5000's built from 65- 4/68 only have an arm with a brake pad on the end of it that rubs against the PTO clutch drum. The band that completely encircles the clutch drum came out in 4/68 on the "New Model" 5000 which also has the 256 cu. in. engine instead of the earlier 233.

If am not mistaken, I believe the PTO setup is pretty much the same on the 5000, 6000, 7000 series as well as the newer series.

The plate where the hydraulic filter is on can be removed from the side and you can actually replace the brake band from the side without removing the top cover. It takes a good steady hand and some swearing, but it can be done.

I won't say it can't be done that way, but for sure I'll never try it. Kinda like pulling the PTO clutch on an 8000 out through the hydraulic pump mount. I did it once, never again.

That is a nice idea except only the late 5000's had an external hyd oil filter .

The others are right, but there is one other thing that can cause the pto to keep turning- warped pto clutch disks. I had one that had a good brake, but the clutch disks were warped so bad that it never stopped, even with a load on it.

PTO brake band is probably broken or possibly worn and out of adjustment. Accessible by removing the 3pt lift cover. Good idea to replace the clutch and brake piston seals, clutch drum sealing rings, and inspect the clutch plates and discs while you are in there. Brake adjustment is critical to proper operation.

Sorry,i did not see this when i made the post above. The brake band around the Pto drum probably has the lining worn away. There is an adjustment on the band, but i can't recall if you can access it through a plate on the side or if you have to pull the lift cover. But you most likely will need a new brakeband. They have a lining on the inside which will wear off over time. The only other thing that might happen to cause it not to stop would be a linkage problem with the engagement lever. If it feels okay, its probably the band.I don't get many of these in the shop anymore, the pto was pretty well bullet proof on these tractors. In my opinion the 5000 was the best Ford tractor ever built. You can order a service manual off this site detailing the pto system on your tractor.I would suggest you do so for reference when troubleshooting or repairing your tractor.
