My Ford (NH) dealer contacted me this week. He has the transmission and rear end off a late (3 cyl) 4000. It has the 3 point deck on it. It was swapped out because the Select - O - Speed has some problems. He wants to sell it very cheap. If it doesn't go soon he'll sell it for scrap. Likely lots of good parts and even a good rear axle and three point deck here. Any reason to buy that unit from him? Or shall I just let him scrap it? Thanks.

Don't take that as a question. It was more of an observation. If you had you'd know that I'm a Select-O-Speed fanatic and have considerable experience with them. That's why the wink. You kinda acted like you thought you were telling me something I didn't know.

Find out how much cheap is. If you have a SOS then I would keep it for parts for yourself or maybe make a few $$$ selling parts to someone that might need some. Once those SOS transmission get melted down they never come back, and one less transmission that could help fix maybe 3 or 4 more. Just my thought.

Junk around here is bringing $150 a ton and I think what your talking about should weigh roughly 1500 pounds. If you had to buy one piece at New Holland what would that cost? Then if or not you have room to store it. If you fool with s-o-s pieces they are getting hard to come by. People think they are junk and unfortunately scrap them. The reputation of the sos is suspect leading to their value being low. You either love it or hate it. To us these tractors work good for certain applications, but an sos tractor to me is worth 1/2 of an 8 speed one.

Checking the position of the jam nuts and/or clevises on the brake rods will give a general idea of the brake disc condition. If it has some brake left and the axle seals haven't been leaking, I'd say go for it. Lots of parts/assemblies there that will fit many, many Fords.
